Run for the Orphans

They Need You!
Calling all runners, walkers, spectators and volunteers! The third annual Rustic Pathways Tribe to Tribe Marathon to benefit Karen Hill Tribe children needs you. Last year over 350 runners participated, hundreds more cheered from the sidelines, and the national television news covered the race results! This year’s event promises to be even bigger and more exciting. Challenge yourself to run the full marathon, take it a little easier with a half marathon, or run a fun 5-K and then cheer your friends on to the finish line. Whichever race you choose, you’ll rise to a challenge, help local students realize a brighter future, and have a blast along the way. Rather watch than sweat it out? No problem! Get involved by setting up the course, making signs, helping manage logistics, and providing support to the runners, all the while earning service hours.

There are over 300,000 ethnic Karen people in Thailand, mostly in Mae Hong Son Province along the Burmese border. Many of these people were actually born in Burma, and they’ve been forced to leave their homes behind for a better life across the border in Thailand. Organized through the Rustic Pathways Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the marathon will help support the students at the Baan Rai School in Mae Sariang who live at the Rustic Pathways Children’s Home. We hope you’ll find this cause inspiring and encourage you to raise funds at home before you leave for Thailand. If you’d like to contribute more, please check out the Rustic Pathways Foundation website at rusticpathwaysfoundation.org for information on how to raise money for every mile you run.

Get Set…
You’ll arrive into Chiang Mai, the hub of Northwestern Thailand, which you’ll use to recover from jet lag and acclimatize before the big day. Then you’re off to the heart of Hill Tribe country to check out the racecourse, get yourself situated, and help everyone pump themselves up before the big day. Your home while you’re here will be the Rustic Pathways Hill Tribe Orphanage. This ongoing project provides a home for local Karen students who have been separated from their parents because of the ongoing conflict in Burma. Meet some of the bright and eager students this event will help, and spend some time visiting their school and listening to their stories and their hopes for the future. You’ll also have the chance to meet students from the Tribal Shooters program, who will cover the event as a photojournalism team.

GO!!!!!
Race day starts early with a blessing ceremony by local monks. After the ceremony, you and your fellow runners from around the world are off to the start. The run will begin in Mae Sariang, just a short drive from the Hill Tribe Orphanage. The scenic route will treat you to a cornucopia of local sights and sounds as you run past temples and through small villages, passing farmers working their rice fields and many of the region’s famous teak trees. You’ll cross the finish line back at the Hill Tribe Orphanage to cheers of fellow runners, the students and teachers from the orphanage, and hundreds of local friends. Whether you ran the full marathon or volunteered to help make the day happen, you’re sure to be exhausted from the day’s events, but festivities at the orphanage await your arrival! Replenish your energy alongside hundreds of new friends at a breakfast feast, relax with a soothing Thai massage, watch traditional Thai dancing, or ride an elephant at our finish-line celebration!

The Journey Home
Your last couple of days in Thailand will be spent in Chiang Mai, where you’ll have a few days to enjoy the city’s cool vibe, awesome cuisine, and fantastic shopping. Soothe your sore muscles with a Thai massage, check out the city’s spectacular temples, and explore the famous night market. You’ll leave the country not only having completed a marathon, but also having left a lasting gift for the Karen students at the Hill Tribe Orphanage.
