Introduction to Community Service Thailand

A Wonderful Introduction to Service
Welcome to one of the world’s truly special places! This wonderful program at our Ricefields Service Base includes 40 hours of rewarding service mixed with enriching cultural and social activities. This is our single most popular and rewarding service program in the world, and it’s also a great opportunity to share your life with some of the planet’s kindest people.

Live in an Authentic Thai Village
Life here is easy going and enjoyable. Villagers are really appreciative of our service initiatives, and you’ll feel their warm welcome in a thousand ways. Your daily routine might include offering alms to the local monks, helping repair or build houses, teaching English, providing meals to elderly citizens, shopping at the market, and cooking sticky rice! While it will certainly be different from your home, you’ll quickly groove into Thai life and begin to live like a local.

You’ll sleep in a cool and comfortable Thai-style bed and enjoy an attached Western bathroom with a hot shower. You’ll make friends with the other students in your room (or hong), and each hong will have a dedicated staff member who will serve as the Hua Naa Hong (or Head of the Room). Your Hua Naa Hong will help you get the most from your stay by organizing special activities such as a shopping trip to a local bazaar, a night on the town, an evening of Thai dancing and music, or a traditional Thai massage. To encourage more diversity, you will not necessarily join the same community service projects as your roommates. We do this to further enhance your learning experience and knit the whole Ricefields team closely together.

Try Several Different Service Projects
We offer nine distinct and rewarding community service projects at The Ricefields Base, and you’ll have the chance to work on at least three of these during your stay. On the weekend, there will be one daily project (often a larger undertaking shared by the entire Base). This will allow time for social activities and the chance to explore other parts of Thailand. Each community service project normally accommodates between three and twelve students and is led by experienced and dedicated Thai and Western staff members.

Life at The Base is an Absolute Blast!
Everyone loves The Ricefields Base and the awesome host family! Musicians put on concerts, villagers teach Thai dance, staff members barbecue by the pool, trained masseuses give Thai massages, and ping-pong matches, yoga sessions, volleyball tournaments, and pick-up soccer games punctuate your free time. One of the most popular activities is ‘monk chats,’ which allow you to sit down with local monks and ask questions about Buddhist practice and life.

Villagers are also quite likely to invite your hong over for dinner, or you may find yourself getting involved with diverse activities such as planting rice, helping to birth a calf, going disco bowling, and learning to cook delicious Thai food.

Give a Little and Get Back a Lot!
You’ll love the villagers, the service, the laughing children, your host family, the cool leaders, and the overall vibe at The Ricefields Base. You’ll become part of a positive, happy team and quickly see the impact of your service work. Many past students tell us that their experience here changed their lives. Come join us – you’ll never forget your time here.

There is a great need for assistance in this area, and only with a concerted effort can these problems can be eradicated. The Veterinary Assistance Project will share time between two different local clinics, and will also have an outreach program geared to provide information and care for animals in more remote areas. The project will begin with an orientation where students will learn the basics of handling animals and how to remain safe at all times. Students will assist with basic care in the clinics, and then head out on a new Rustic Outreach program and into local villages where students will visit with the local people and share information as well as basic supplies where needed.

Students from our Ricefields Base have worked in local schools for many years, and schools from across the region now ask us to send our students to teach and share with local Thai students. Students on this project love their work in local elementary, middle, and high schools alongside Rustic Pathways leaders and local teachers. The format of the teaching varies from school to school, ranging from playing games and singing songs with younger students, to teaching conversational English or discussing cultural & social issues with older classes. You’ll also have the change to work outside the classroom, providing small group tutoring lessons to motivated students who desperately want to learn English, but can’t afford lessons from native speakers. We also play sports, joining local teams or forming a Rustic team to compete in village matches. In addition to working directly with students, we also provide books, materials, school supplies, and computers for nearby schools.

Routine tasks include taking care of the yards, painting temple buildings, repairing community property, and preparing food for the monks. The Swing Sets, Coloring Books & Kiddies Project provides materials and on-going support for the teachers, local volunteers, and children. Students love working with the local toddlers and are always kindly received by the smiling children and staff. Students work directly with the children and teachers – playing with and supervising 40 smiling little faces. When not playing with the children, we build and maintain playground structures, helping to bring joy to the villagers and provide the youngsters with a safe and engaging environment in which to grow. Details
Organic farming is rapidly gaining adherents around the world. In Thailand, many farmers in rural areas are beginning to consider the impacts which recent pesticide use has had on their land and their health, and there is a real desire for information about organic gardening practices. With the idea that worldwide change starts locally, Rustic Pathways has already created an organic garden at our Base, which fills our plates with delicious vegetables year round. Hands in the Dirt teaches students practical organic farming techniques as they work alongside local farmers planting rice and other tasks. Students learn a great deal about life on a rural Thai farm, while promoting healthy and sustainable practices. Roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty with these happy, humble, and grateful farmers.

BOBBING & FLOATING

7

Highlights

    • HELP to prevent unnecessary drowning deaths that occur when children fall into flooded rice fields
    • TEACH at our pool, helping young students learn basic safety in and around the water, as well as how to float, bob, swim, and perform basic rescues
    • PROVIDE training for one group of students every day, working alongside their teachers and our staff to teach water safety and basic water skills
    • SWIM in the pool with excited young Thai students (some have never seen a pool!), and smile because you are helping to save young lives
Details
There are an abnormally high number of deaths by drowning in Asia due to the prevalence of lakes and flooded fields and the lack of opportunities to practice swimming. About 30 young students and their teachers come to our pool daily for training in water safety, basic first aid, floating, swimming, and practical water rescue. Working with local teachers and sports educators, we have developed a fun and informative curriculum to teach children how to be safe in and around the water. Students on this project spend time teaching basic swimming and safety skills, as well as teaching excited young children how to bob, float, and help in an emergency situation. This program is loads of fun. It’s also a practical and important initiative designed to save the precious lives of young children who live and play in this region.

WELCOME HOMES

9

Highlights

    • SHARE in the construction of simple, functional, local-style houses with other students, Rustic Pathways staff members, volunteers, and the family who will call this house their home
    • WORK with your hands & heart to give a needy family the happy home they desperately need
    • LEARN how to build a house from the ground up so you never take housing for granted
Details
The Welcome Homes Project builds houses for needy people in rural villages. Help us as we construct and fund new homes and make important renovations to existing ones. Some weeks we will work and fund our own projects, while other weeks we join up with the local Habitat for Humanity Chapter. Participants need no background in construction, although a willingness to do physical work is important. Students and their friends work alongside both Thai and American staff from Rustic Pathways to build basic houses for people in the villages surrounding our Ricefields Base. We work one fourhour construction shift every morning, and a house is generally completed in 4 weeks. Everyone needs a house – we invite you to join us as we work together to provide the essential gift of shelter to appreciative villagers near our Base.
