THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE EXTENSION

Head out of the ordinary and into the exotic during this journey through the magical borderlands of three diverse countries. From the oxcarts and teashops of Burma to the dazzling rice
paddies of Laos and the traditional rhythm of northernmost Thailand, this trip will take you across three borders, through captivating scenery, and into the heart of one of the most culturally rich areas in Southeast Asia. You’ll learn about Buddhism in the region’s beautiful temples, make local friends in three countries, and taste the subtle (but very important) distinctions between the traditional cuisines of Laos, Burma and Thailand – all during one whirlwind week in the exotic locals that make up the Golden Triangle!

Bust Into Burma
The journey begins on the Thai-Burma border at the Mae Sai–Taichelek crossing. Your first steps into Burma will transport you to a different time and place. Here bicycle rickshaws whiz by as old men discuss politics in small tea stalls set up on street corners. This is untouched Southeast Asia.

After one of the most beautiful drives in the world surrounded by rivers, mountains, and vibrant rice fields, you will arrive in the heart of the Shan State. Kentung is a melting pot of peoples and cultures, and the sights you see here will showcase Burma’s diversity and beauty. Step into Chinese mud brick houses, marvel at the British architecture of the churches and administration buildings, and get acquainted with Buddhism at Shan and Thai temples. Here you can delve into the bustle of the central bazaar, bid on water buffalos at the livestock market, trek into untouched Akha and Eng Hill Tribe villages, learn about Buddhism in centuries-old temples, and bathe in the soothing waters of the area’s hot springs. If you have never before ventured into the seldom-seen land of Burma, this trip will provide a great introduction to its rich cultures and welcoming people.

Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang
The adventure begins in Chiang Mai, where you’ll explore temples tucked in the forest, check out refreshing waterfalls, and peruse colorful local markets. Then fly directly to the
charming French colonial town of Luang Prabang. A center of Buddhist education, Luang Prabang’s exquisitely ornamented temples and hundreds of orange-clad monks are sure to captivate your imagination. Here you will feast on fresh baguettes and rich coffee – the delicious remnants of the city’s French colonial past – explore centuries-old temples, and marvel at the charm of this lovely town. As the early morning mist rises off the jagged limestone mountains, you will take part in one of the most honored traditions in Southeast Asia and give alms to the local monks. Then observe river life along the
banks of the Mekong as fishermen perch on the narrow noses of their boats and cast circular nets into the water. After fully exploring this World Heritage town, you will hop on a plane back to Chiang Mai, and then drive through the mountains to the border of Burma at the Mae Sai–Taichelek crossing.
