Waking Up to the World
The morning gong sounds three rounds just minutes before the sky alights with streaks of pink. Saffron robes are pulled from teak-wood railings, and the day begins as you take mindful footsteps down the well-trodden path to the temple. Through the arched doorway, a Buddha statue awaits. You wai three times – one each for the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Focusing on your breathing, you begin to slow your mind and feel the moment – something you realize you haven’t done in a terribly long time. Opening your eyes again, you notice new life in the world around you: Trees are greener, insects move with purpose, and everything seems more alive…
This is Not a Temple Tour!

The Middle Path in Today’s World
Buddhism is apparent in nearly every level of Thai and Lao culture. Discover why some trees are draped in bright orange robes and why you see spirit houses everywhere you go. Learn how Buddhism permeates every aspect of life in this corner of the world and immerse yourself in the relaxing flow of the local culture. You’ll take part in the daily ritual of local monks as you help them with their chores, building your merit along the way. Excursions to exotic markets will introduce you to the fascinating world of antique Buddhist amulets, which are literally worth their weight in gold. Marvel at the charming French-Colonial architecture of Luang Prabang, explore some of the holiest temples in Thailand, and ride an elephant through a jungle!
Guides Who Know the Way
While the focus of this program is on Buddhist life and practice, it is also about having fun and enjoying the places you visit. Our guides can help you delve as deep into Buddhism as you’d like, and they will also show you a great time. Part of what makes Buddhism so pleasant is the easy-going attitude it encourages, and you’ll be constantly reminded of this throughout the program.
Finally, on the last few days of the trip, you’ll head to a secluded Karen Hill Tribe village, where you’ll begin a multi-day meditation immersion experience that will expose you to true Buddhist practice. Niyom, one of our most caring and interesting staff members, lived for several years at this temple, and here you will meet his friends, his family, and the monk who mentored him.
Expect to be moved by the amazing people you meet along the way, fascinated by the history and tenets of Buddhism, and more in tune with your inner self than ever before. Students of all religious backgrounds are encouraged to join this exciting and enlightening program. In the end, you just may find that this program has taught you as much about yourself as it has about Buddhist life!
