Director's Program Andes to the Amazon

If you are ready for the adventure of a lifetime, then join us for this special opportunity to enter one of the most unique and diverse regions on earth. This amazing journey will bring you from the high altiplano of the Peruvian Andes straight into the heart of the Amazon Rainforest. This is a rare chance to experience everything – from wooly alpacas to anteaters, snowcapped mountains to scarlet macaws, pre-Incan ruins to pristine rainforest – in one incredible expedition.

Incas, Andean Peaks, and Islands in the Sky
Your adventure begins in the Andean town of Cusco. Spend the afternoon acclimating as you stroll through the cobblestone streets of this ancient Incan capital. The next morning set off to where the water meets the sky. At 12,000 feet, Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world and home to colorful cultures, floating villages, and tranquil blue waters.

The next day you will drive past highland herders and the traditional villages of the Peruvian plateau. Then – after crossing a 15,000-foot-high pass – you will descend rugged roads past stone huts and panoramic views before settling in for the night to a camp in a traditional mountain town.

Whitewater, Wilderness and Wildlife
As the Tambopata River drains from the Peruvian and Bolivian highlands, it passes through one of the most biologically diverse areas on earth. Far from roads, tourists, and villages, the Tambopata River is a faraway place that seems to exist in another time. Your days on the river will be filled with the perfect mix of tranquility and adrenaline. Search for endangered species and try your hand at fishing during calm days. Be on the lookout for various monkeys and giant otters, one of the Tambopata’s endangered species, during blissfully peaceful stretches of water. Then get ready to navigate heart-pounding class II, III, and IV rapids as the water surges through the lush rainforest. Your experienced guides will ensure that even beginner paddlers are prepared to navigate these rushing waters.

Set up camp along the river each night and experience the surrounding jungle. You’ll think you’re waking up to the beginning of time as you rise far from the bustle of civilization to the sounds of the jungle. As the river meanders into the Tambopata Reserve, you will be picked up by motorized canoe and pass scattered jungle lodges as you ease your way back into civilization. If time allows, you will stop to see the Tambopata Macaw Lick, where hundreds of scarlet, yellow, and blue macaws flock daily – an amazing end to an incredible adventure!

Join Us Before it’s Too Late!
Unfortunately, like many of the world’s wild places, modernity threatens to encroach and endanger this biological jewel. Newly planned roads are poised to provide hunters and miners access to this remote ecosystem, and other disturbances threaten to forever change one of the world’s last great wildernesses. Come discover this magical place before it disappears forever.

Peru Country Director Gabriel Porter-Henry, who was a professional rafting guide, will be your guide on the Andes to the Amazon program. He is extremely excited to share his passion for whitewater and wildlife with you. Other experienced and professional rafting guides will also help you navigate the rapids and teach you about the flora and fauna along the way. While no previous rafting experience is necessary, this advanced program is rugged and demanding, and you must be prepared for extended camping and a flexible itinerary.   A strong sense of adventure and an open mind are essential. Andes to the Amazon is perfect for those students looking for a once-in-a-lifetime expedition in one of the world’s last truly wild places.
