Andean Adventurer

Into the Andes
Rugged, snow-capped mountains tower over fields of wildflowers. Cows quietly drink from the blue waters of high alpine lakes. Cascading waterfalls thunder down from looming glaciers. Triumphant yodels echo across valleys as climbers summit renowned peaks. This is the highest tropical mountain range in the world and one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever visit. Get ready for the Andean adventure of a lifetime!

Climb into the Cordillera
North of the capital of Lima, Peru’s desert-coastal landscape abruptly rises to the Cordillera Blanca. Here more than 50 mountains over 5,700 meters pierce the sky with razor sharp ridges, jagged peaks, and imposing glaciers. Each year adventurers from across the globe migrate here to take advantage of one of nature’s premiere playgrounds.

You’ll begin your journey with a quiet stroll through Incan ruins and a delicious cup of coca tea. After adjusting to the altitude, you’ll set off on foot and enter the wilds of these majestic mountains. During the next few days you’ll trek past turquoise lakes, hike over mountain passes, savor delicious backcountry dinners, and gaze at a clear night sky from alpine campsites. Along the way you will witness beautiful fields of wildflowers, soaring Andean birds, and the mighty peak of Alpamayo, which UNESCO named the most beautiful mountain in the world.

To the Peak of Pisco!
No trip to the Cordillera Blanca would be complete without an attempt to summit one of its immense, 5,700-meter-high peaks. After four days of acclimatizing and trekking along the Santa Cruz Trail, the quest for the top of Pisco begins! The relatively non-technical climb up Pisco, towering above the azul lakes of Llanganuco, provides the perfect mix of challenge and safety for beginning mountaineers. Led by certified mountain guides, this trip requires no previous trekking experience. Good physical condition and a strong will carry most novice adventurers to Pisco’s glacial summit. Gazing across the Cordillera Blanca from atop the glistening summit will be the crowning achievement of your Andean adventure.

People of the Hills
The call to adventure and beauty attracts many visitors to the Cordillera Blanca yearly, but it’s often the warm people living in the shadow of its peaks who bring them back. Rather than simply viewing splendid vistas and trekking across impressive landscapes, you will spend your last few days getting to know the people of the area through meaningful service projects alongside local village members. You will soon realize that it is the people who really make these mountains come alive.
