ADVANCED PHOTO WORKSHOP: MONGOLIA
800 years ago, Genghis Khan, possibly the greatest military leader in history, united the nomadic tribes of Mongolia and created the largest land empire the world had ever seen. There had never been an army as feared and successful as the horsemen of the steppes. Today, they live at the mercy of brutal winter winds and prolonged drought or are crammed within the ger districts of Ulaanbaatar, where they are in constant struggle to find work to provide for their families. This program is an advanced, structured photography workshop that will allow each student to develop and execute his or her own ongoing project, beginning a portfolio of a serious photojournalist.
The Wild West
Photographing Mongolia is special because it is a land of extremes – snowy mountains, wide expanses of grassy steppe, and windswept desert are a few of the diverse landscapes in the region. The most stunning sceneries, untouched landscapes, and vibrant nomadic life are found in the western province of Khovd. Our setting will be where the desolate plains of the Gobi Desert meet the majestic peaks of the Altai Mountain Range. Here, Mongolian herders lead their goats to the dark waters of Khar Us Lake, while Kazakh melon farmers harvest their crops along the valleys of the Khovd River. These surroundings will provide a visual feast, likely producing stunning photographs and interesting stories that reflect your cross-cultural learning and acquired respect for this rare and unique culture.
Photo Documentary Workshop
Photojournalism and documentary photography are exciting, challenging careers. The first step is mastering your individual photographic vision, style, and building your portfolio. Professional photojournalists will be your guides through the region, teaching and mentoring you throughout the trip. This advanced workshop is designed to get you out of your comfort zone, and show you your strengths and weaknesses as a photographer by exposing you to new techniques, assignments, and critiques. Beyond making beautiful images to take home, this trip is about learning how to be a visual journalist: exposing yourself to new cultures, overcoming language barriers, and gaining access into the lives of those you meet to create powerful storytelling images.
