The Spectacular Kerala Backwaters

Journey Into the Backwaters
Travel deep into the 900 kilometers of waterways hidden in Kerala, lend a hand in the communities you pass along the way, and discover unspoiled villages and rural hamlets while living on a traditional kettuvallam houseboat. Lonely Planet considers traveling the Kerala Backwaters “one of the ten things to do before you die,” and this community service trip will take you deep into the heart of this spectacular region and provide you with a first-hand window into life here.

Your Floating Home
After arriving in Kerala, you’ll watch the sun set as you depart from Allepey and savor your first delicious Kerala dinner
beneath the stars and amidst one of the world’s most beautiful dining rooms. During your stay on the houseboat, you will live in comfortable rooms fitted with warm showers and Western toilets. Your kitchen will be right on board, and you’ll enjoy everything from Indian vegetarian delights to fresh fish and prawn cooked in mouthwatering curries. During the evenings, you may have the opportunity to learn to paddle boats just like the locals who compete in the Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race, which is named for the race’s snakeshaped boats. This huge annual race takes place each August. Our local friends built the houseboats here, and they know the secrets of traveling these meandering waterways like the backs of their hands. They will be your guides as you travel through some of the most pristine areas of a region called ‘God’s own country’ by the people who live here.

Service by Seaways
Each day you’ll wake up in the same bed but with a new view from your houseboat’s deck and a new place to provide service. You’ll assist schools with health education, initiate art programs in various villages, and provide necessary donations to jump-start educational activities in the schools. You will also contribute to basic construction projects and help out in areas affected by the 2004 tsunami that hit the Kerala Coast. Daily visits to the shores will introduce you to several NGOs, and you will learn how your service contributes to long-term initiatives. Smiling children will greet you as you step ashore, families will frantically wave as your boat idles by their remote villages, and gracious thanks will see you off and remain in your heart long after your days of service in the backwaters.

Life is Grand in Kerala
In addition to helping out on service initiatives and living on a boat, you’ll also learn the local skills and traditions for which Kerala is known. Catch your own dinner in the evenings and learn to cook it in Kerala’s vast array of spices. Even though you won’t attend the Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race, your group will have a friendly competition of its own on one of the backwater lakes.
