Tanzania is rich in many ways. With over 126 different ethnic groups, some of Africa’s most celebrated conservation areas, and incredible natural wonders like Mount Kilimanjaro, the country offers a wealth of natural and cultural diversity. But as in many places in Africa, many people here struggle to get by on a daily basis. Join us for a month in Tanzania and discover this incredible country while giving back to its people.

You will begin your trip in Arusha, which sits in the shadow of the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro and is nestled among some of the country’s most celebrated national parks and game reserves. It’s a vibrant town, with wonderful weather, beautiful scenery, and a lively music scene. Arusha will be your base during your service work in the nearby village of Poli, and you’ll have ample time to explore it while you’re here. The average annual income in Poli is just $70 per capita, and the villagers here live without many of the things you might consider a necessity. Most sell fruit or coffee to make ends meet, and they often live in extremely basic structures.

You will be welcomed into the Nkoanrika Primary School while you’re here, and you will play, teach and learn with the local students of this school. You’ll make sure each and every student gets the individual attention they deserve. You may also help with various other community and environmental service projects around the village as needed. Each day you’ll transfer to Poli in the morning and return to Arusha each evening for dinner and exploration.  The evenings and weekends will be full of fun and cultural activities. You may take a cooking class with local women and learn to whip up a scrumptious meal of Tanzanian cuisine, or play a friendly soccer match against a local team.

After saying goodbye to the friendly people of Poli, you’ll head off to your next service site, the town of Karatu, which is about a three-hour drive away. Here you’ll lend a hand at the MangolaJuu Primary School and also help with basic construction and repair projects in several surrounding Masaai villages. Get to know the bright kids of MangolaJuu and meet thefamous Masaai. When your time in Karatu comes to an end, you’ll transfer back to Arusha for some last-minute bargain hunting before catching a flight home or on to your next Gap Year adventure.
