Green Island Service
A Picture-Perfect Location
Toba Totoka, the name of Rustic Pathways’ Island Base, literally translates to ‘beautiful bay,’ and its location is truly spectacular. You’ll awake each morning to the sun rising over the hills surrounding your island home, spend time with our friends from neighboring Malakati Village each day, and enjoy watching the sun settle across the Pacific waters each evening. The rhythm of life on this remote island is peaceful, relaxed and easy. Over the years, Rustic Pathways students have made many friends in this small village, and the people here are always eager to introduce our students to island life and welcome them in the warmest Fijian tradition.
Eco-Centered Island Service
The service projects will introduce you to the difficulties that people living in remote places often face and challenge you to think about possible solutions. Here on Malakati, supplies generally arrive only once a week and are brought in by barge. Trash removal is also extremely challenging. The village burns all of its waste, which has adverse effects for human respiratory systems, ocean reefs and the surrounding environment.
The projects will focus on implementing sustainable and eco-friendly practices. The village of Malakati and Rustic Pathways have already taken a few small steps towards these objectives, including the creation of a marine reserve. Whether you are designing a trash removal system, constructing compost toilets, or working in the reserve, you can be sure that your service will benefit the community long after you leave.
In addition to service, you will learn about the strong cultural traditions that are entwined into daily life on this remote island. From the esteemed chief and the village elders to the families and their enthusiastic children, everyone has their own role and responsibilities to help the village function.
You’ll take pride in the work you do for the villagers, develop a love for the spectacular locations you visit and the friendly people you meet, and bask in the knowledge that you’re one of a select few who have ever been lucky enough to live in this picturesque location.
When the Work is Done
Despite its remote location, Malakati is a hive of activity. You can relax with your new friends in their gardens, try your hand at sunset fishing, or hike into the hills that rise behind the village. Local school children are also always on hand for a game of rugby or soccer on the beach. And with the ocean just steps from your front door, a swim in the warm Pacific waters is always an option. At night, join a kava ceremony at the community hall, play guitar, or recount the day’s stories with your fellow travelers.
A Fond Farewell
You won’t want to say goodbye to this piece of tropical paradise. But when you do, the families you have connected with will gather to bid you a fond Fijian farewell. Malakati is absolutely beautiful, and your memories of the wonderful people here will remain with you forever.
