Children of the Highlands

Immerse yourself in the culture of Fiji as you settle into your new home in Nasivikoso Village. The village is governed by a hereditary chief and village elders – one from each of its six
clans – and is home to 500 native Fijians. Nestled in a breathtaking valley beneath peaceful mountains and next to a crystalclear river, Nasivikoso is a picture-perfect postcard of rural Fijian life and warm hospitality.

The families here are close knit, and you will quickly become a part of the village. Villagers will welcome you into their homes to share a cup of tea or invite you to participate in a traditional kava ceremony. Accepting their offer always leads to laughter
and insight into life in these remote parts. People here cherish time with family and friends and will truly enjoy getting to know you and making you a part of their family.

Our Highlands Immersion Base - The Nasivikoso Bure
The Rustic Pathways Base here, our Nasivikoso Bure, has become the year-round home to a number of our Fijian staff members. They’ll be excited to welcome you and eager to show you around the area in which they grew up, including its beautiful hidden waterfalls and other secret spots known only to the local village citizens. The upgraded amenities of The Base will help you adjust to village life while still offering a total immersion in the local culture.

At night a local host family will invite you into their home in small groups. Get ready to become a part of the clan as your adopted momo (father) and nene (mother) – as well as plenty of brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins – welcome you into their hearts and homes and make you a part of their family. You’ll leave many of the conveniences of modern life behind while you’re here and step into a very simple life that offers many unexpected lessons.

It Takes a Village
Local schools work hard to provide a good education for their students, but they face huge challenges because of their remote locations. You may watch an entire school share one or two beat-up soccer balls or enter a library that consists of only one row of tattered books.

Students learn English in school, but they have few opportunities to practice with native speakers. You’ll help them practice their language skills and will get involved with art and sports enrichment programs at the village kindergarten. In the evenings, The Base will be transformed into an impromptu tutoring center where you will help local kids with their homework. You’ll become the students’ teacher and their friend, and you will likely see your new host siblings at these evening study sessions.

Get your hands dirty during breaks from service at local schools. You’ll help with small community development projects in the village, such as building paths and flush toilets, or putting a fresh coat of paint on community buildings. You may also work on basic construction and painting projects to help upgrade the school facilities and create positive learning environments.

Breathtaking Vistas, Towering Waterfalls
The natural beauty of Fiji will surround you throughout your time here. You will have ample opportunity to explore this lush landscape with our local guides who are eager to show you the secrets of the Fiji Highlands, and its mountains and waterfalls.

During this 10-day program, you can earn up to 32 community service hours, and connect with any of our other South Pacific countries for a fun-filled summer. Questions? For further information please contact us at fiji@rusticpathways.com.
