*Fiji Update: March 24, 2009
Please note that due to changes in flight schedules from Los Angeles, the scheduled dates of all of our South Pacific programs have been changed. All programs will now depart the USA on Tuesday and return on Thursday. The updated departure dates are listed below and any dates in our printed catalog are now incorrect.
ItinerarySun, Sand and Service The Fiji IslandsSummer 2009
Day 01 - Monday Depart the USA All of Rustic Pathways scheduled group flights to Fiji depart from Los Angeles. Our carrier is Air Pacific – Fiji’s national airline. The flight each week is non-stop to Nadi International Airport and is escorted by a Rustic Pathways Flight Leader. The flight departs LAX in the late evening and takes about 10 hours. During your flight, take the time to get to know other students, get some sleep in preparation for your arrival in the South Pacific, relax with a movie or two and start to settle into the easy-going and friendly nature of the Fijian’s and their legendary hospitality.
Day 02 – Tuesday In transit Today is “lost” as you cross the international dateline, but don’t worry too much… you will get it back on your way home!
Day 03 - Wednesday Bula! Welcome to Fiji! Upon clearing customs and immigration, you will be greeted by a Rustic Pathways staff member and transported to your new home at our beautiful South Pacific Eco Lodge Base. Here you will enjoy a tropical breakfast with your new staff and new friends. You will receive an orientation about the week ahead of you while you overlook sugarcane fields that seem to fall into the ocean. The staff will help you settle into your new home and answer any questions you might have. You will be given enough time to relax and unwind while getting to know your new friends.
After lunch there is no time to waste. By mid-afternoon you will be participating in one of our eight Servicio comunitario opportunities for a half day of service. This is a great time to start exploring your new neighborhood while getting to know your local community. You will be surprised how welcoming and excited the Fijians are to see you! There’s not a better way to say hello than with Servicio comunitario!
During the evening you will participate in a formal sevusevu ceremony (a traditional welcoming ceremony) and begin to learn about the amazing country you have just entered. Dressed in your new sulu (traditional Fijian sarong or skirt), sitting around the kava circle, you will begin to learn that there is more than just the world-renown beaches that makes Fiji special. The local staff will guide you through your first step of cultural understanding as you participate in this ceremony. Drinking kava while watching the sunset from our huge deck with new friends will be a perfect end to your first day in Fiji. This is an experience you can only have in Fiji.
Day 04 and 05 – Thursday and Friday The Fijian People and Your Projects Thursday will be your first full day of service work! Rustic Pathways has developed a wonderful relationship with the local people of Momi Bay and the larger Nadi area. Project work during the course of your program will involve participation in a variety of initiatives. You can expect to spend time working in the local schools, tutoring students in English, getting involved with afternoon sporting events and facilitating much needed art and music classes. In addition, you might be singing songs and creating crafts at local kindergartens or orphanEdad while learning new games that the Fijian children love to play.
Our services extend beyond the children; we teach computer literacy classes to people of all Edad who would not have access to this information otherwise. Other projects involve repairs and maintenance to school buildings, construction of new amenities or upgrading present facilities. You may also spend a day at the local hospital or one of the rural nursing stations to help disperse medical donations, teach the locals about hygiene, dental care and general medical issues. If you love the outdoors you will be able to help preserve the marine life and coral coast through environmental projects with local Fijians. Your service will be varied, interesting, challenging and extremely rewarding and worthwhile.
In the afternoon and evenings you will participate in some of the beautiful natural wonders Fiji has to offer. From surfing down sand dunes to soaking in the natural hot springs or jumping into a pool of mud, no afternoon is dull. At our base house we host meke performances (indigenous Fijian dances) and Indo-Fijian cultural nights where you can learn about the large Indian culture that exists in Fiji. We keep your afternoons full of the exotic beauty that makes Fiji a top tourist destination while providing you the opportunity to learn about the culture that created it.
Rustic Pathways is also seeking to directly help the communities we serve with donations of items that are too expensive to be purchased by Fijian organizations or unavailable in Fiji. The donation lists have been created by Fijians for Fijians. We would like to encourage all students who participate in this program to bring with them some of the items on the donation list. These items will be donated at the site where they are most appropriately needed. This will greatly expand the resources these schools, hospitals, villEdad and homeless shelters need to operate effectively.
Day 06 and 07 – Saturday and Sunday Work and Wander this Weekend! During the weekend you will participate in large group Servicio comunitario projects. Generally, work on Saturday or Sunday mornings will involve projects that enable us to complete tasks at schools while students are not in their classrooms or larger projects that involve a whole village or community. Many of the local adults are able to participate and get involved after meeting their job obligations during the course of a normal working week.
After your morning of service there is time for touring and sightseeing in the late afternoon. Your group can determine the pace of the afternoon but it may include a few hours at a local beach to relax, swim, snorkel or perhaps even learn to surf. Other options include a stop in town to explore a Hindu temple, survey the open-air market for possible bargains and souvenirs or taking a class in local handicrafts. Your staff will know all the best sights and activities to fill up your day and will happily help you make the most of your afternoon.
When your group is not doing service this weekend, your time will be spent enjoying the wonders that Fiji has to offer in whatever way that fits your mood! How you spend your free day is up to you. You can go swimming, snorkeling or surfing at our beautiful Natadola beach, explore paradise while island hopping, participate in amazing, adrenaline water sports, discover the world below us while scuba diving or discover the world above us while you sky dive! Get ready for a day you will never forget!
Days 07 to 09 – Monday and Tuesday More Exciting Projects and Wonderful Cross-Cultural Participation!
During the next two days your focus will be on a variety of projects your group is undertaking for the week. Each morning you will break into small groups and concentrate on a new project for the day.
Evenings are special at the Eco Lodge! They range from the ridiculous 80’s dance parties to the quiet songs around a traditional kava circle. The staff will charm you into being outrageously silly or sincerely reflective. You will find that Fijians will inspire you to try both.
Tuesday nights are reserved for our weekly farewell ceremony. Even if you are staying another 4 weeks, you will be moved by this tradition. Here you will have the opportunity to reflect on your experiences, lessons learned and say good bye to your new but very special friendships.
Day 10 – Wednesday A little bit of Morning Sunshine! Today is the chance to spend your morning soaking up the sun before you prepare for you afternoon of service. You will get the opportunity to welcome a new group of participants to Rustic Pathways Momi Base house and answer their questions as the students before you answered yours. By afternoon, you will be back out in the community working on much need service initiatives.
As you begin your second week you will find that your understanding of Fijian culture will be better, the depth of the friendships you’ve made will be stronger and your ability to communicate, participate and contribute will be enhanced the longer you spend here.
Day 11 to 17 – Saturday to Tuesday The remainder of the week will run much the same as the first, although no day is exactly the same in Fiji so there will be new opportunities of service and adventure. Fiji has a way of seducing you and these islands have captivated many a visitor. Finding a place with the degree of friendliness that the locals possess, the natural beauty that this country exudes, melded with the easy-going and peaceful pace of life is wonderfully refreshing and incredibly enticing. Your staff will encourage you to enjoy all that this program has to offer and we hope that the quality and range of projects, personalities and activities you experience only make you want to stay longer
Weekend Side Trips!
New this year, you will have the opportunity to join an optional Weekend Side Trip during your second week of the program (and third, fourth and beyond if you stay for longer). These trips are a great way to explore more of Fiji in the midst of the important service you are a part of from the Eco Lodge. These Side Trips keep the experience very fresh and add a great deal to the overall experience. Please note that number of Servicio comunitario hours awarded may be effected if doing a weekend trip that extends for two or more days. For more information about these weekend adventures, please see http://www.rusticpathways.com/2009/fiji/sidetrips.htm
Day 17 - Wednesday Moce “Goodbye” Well your time in Fiji has flown by like a dream and you should now be truly entrenched in Fiji and much of what this easy-going island nation is all about. Today is a chance to do some much desired shopping for souvenirs. You will get the chance to explore town and the local handicraft market for gifts and reminders of your time in Fiji.
If you are departing to the USA tonight, after a final meal with your group, you travel to the airport and bid Fiji farewell (until next year perhaps). You will be escorted to LAX with a Rustic Pathways Flight leader.
For those students who are continuing to another Rustic Pathways program in Fiji or overseas, you will commence your next program this morning.
For students joining the Sun, Sand and Service program for additional weeks, get ready for more adventures, more time with local friends, and a lot more fun! Welcome in the new students and get back out in the amazing community of Fiji!
An Important Note about Schedule Changes:
Rustic Pathways reserves the right to change, alter, or amend the daily itinerary for this trip at any time. Changes can be made for various reasons including changes in flight or program schedules, changes in the schedules of various external tours incorporated in our trips, the addition of new activities into a trip, or the substitution of an old activity for a new activity. The itinerary shown here provides a good outline of the anticipated daily schedule for this program. As with any travel program, some changes may occur.
Introduction to Servicio comunitario in Fiji
In addition to the general Fiji Islands packing list available at www.rusticpathways.com/packinglists all students should review the following information specific to the Introduction to Servicio comunitario program:
Please make sure you have the following items with you:
Twin sheet (fitted), pillow case and light blanket or sleeping bag
3-4 short-sleeved shirts or nice t-shirts for service projects
1-2 long skirts (females), nice shorts (males) for service projects
Flash light or head lamp
Work Gloves
If you are connecting to another program you will have the option to have your laundry washed at the base house. (Approx $10 a bundle).
Many of our service programs include work in schools, where uniforms are typically mandatory and other professional facilitates. For this reason, students are expected to wear appropriate attire when involved in service projects and we ask that students do not wear tank-tops during service. This means that for the vast majority of the program, students will need to wear sleeved shirts or nice t-shirts. In addition, female students should be prepared to wear skirts or pants that cover their knees.
A Special Initiative: Rustic Pathways is seeking to directly help the communities we serve with donations of items to support schools, health centers and other local organizations. Donation lists have been created by the local schools and communities with whom we work and we encourage students who participate in this program to bring 2-5 items to donate along with them. These items will be donated at the site where they are most appropriately needed. You can find the list of suggested items HERE (Optional).

primary schools in the communities surrounding The
Base. We believe that understanding how others live
and sharing in their lives leads to a more tolerant and
peaceful future and that students gain insight into
their own lives through cross-cultural interaction.
Students tutor English and lend a hand in formal
classrooms. They also play sports, help refurbish or
paint schools, and provide much-needed books and

rewarding experience teaching Fijian youth expands
their world view and changes their outlook on life.
MARINE & ENVIRONMENTAL
RESEARCH & MONITORING

GROW vegetables in our local, sustainable garden.
Details
Fiji’s breathtakingly beautiful islands, beaches, and
coral reefs are the country’s main tourist attractions.
But, as in many parts of the world, these magical
environments are threatened by population growth,
pollution, unsustainable tourism, and insufficient
resource management. We are involved in a variety
of initiatives in Fiji that help preserve the country’s
remarkable natural beauty. Students plant trees in a
reforestation effort, clean public beaches, plant
mangroves to prevent erosion, and lend a hand in
cleaning local waterways. Students learn about the
challenges of sustainable development, teach locals
how to preserve their precious ecosystems, and help
care for this incredible environment.

Details
Fijian children are fun and affectionate. They live
without many of the modern amenities others in the
world take for granted yet are some of the happiest
people on the planet. A simple smile or a small gift
can leave an indelible impression on a child and
create long-lasting bonds. Students assist with early
childhood education and provide resources for art
programs, new ideas, and cultural exchange. This
program also helps to revitalize playgrounds, schools,
and child-care facilities. We donate much-needed
art supplies, books, toys, and clothing to enhance the
lives of these children. Students love working with
the kids and quickly collect wonderful experiences,
memories, and photos in return for their time.

Our Home-Cooked Meals program provides hot,
nutritious meals to a growing number of families,
children, and elderly Fijians who struggle to make
ends meet. Students learn how to prepare delicious
Fijian and Indian dishes under the guidance of our
local staff and their families. We cook the meals in the
homes of our neighbors in the local way, over an
open fire with huge pots and lots of stories and
laughter. Once the dishes are ready, students pack
them into containers and hop in the car to deliver
them personally to residents of one of the many
communities that we have joined forces with for this
initiative. Students often share cups of tea with the
families to whom they deliver food and are humbled
by the importance of this fun project.
MEDICAL AID & ASSISTANCE
Work with local care givers to assist
in a variety of heath-care situations
5
Highlights
VISIT rural nursing stations and help dispense
donations and provide basic medical supplies.

students about important dental-care issues.
VOLUNTEER at the local hospital, spend time
with Fijian patients, and assist friendly nurses.

improve conditions at village nursing stations.
Details
Inadequate medical supplies and an insufficient
number of health-care workers mean that many
people here don’t have access to basic care. We are
involved with local health-care facilities and clinics
where students donate time, energy, and supplies to
help ensure that locals get the care they need.
Students volunteer in the local hospital, give
donations to village nursing stations, and provide
basic maintenance work of village dispensaries. We
also join forces with a local dental education program
and lead fun and interactive workshops with local
students on the importance of brushing daily. This
program will be of particular interest for students
with a heart for human-based service.
HAMMERS, NAILS & BRUSHES
Contribute to various building projects in
friendly villEdad surrounding our Base
6
Highlights
LEND A HAND improving the homes of families in
the communities surrounding our Base to ensure
they have access to safe and comfortable housing.
PAINT houses popular colors – pink and purple are
favorites – and bring smiles to local families.

RECEIVE heartfelt thank-yous and know that your
dedicated efforts will last for many years to come.
Details
This project focuses on revitalizing underprivileged
areas of Fijian communities. From individual homes to
schools to health-care centers, many buildings in the
communities surrounding our Base are in need of
upgrades. Students work alongside experienced
local staff who have extensive knowledge of
construction techniques. No building experience is
necessary, but an enthusiastic and energetic attitude
is essential. This is a hands-on project, and students
are rewarded by knowing they helped build
something that will last for years to come. Projects
can range from renovating houses and building toilet
blocks for local schools, to painting community
buildings and landscaping school grounds.
COMPUTERS ARE THE FUTURE
Help Fijian school children
develop basic computer skills
7
Highlights
SHARE your computer knowledge and open new
windows of opportunity for eager Fijian youth.
HELP teachers learn new technological skills so they
can help their students become computer literate.
TEACH Fijian youth and help them learn how to use
computers, basic software, and an e-mail account.
LAUGH with your students and feel a great sense
of accomplishment as you watch their skills grow.
Details
Computer skills and technical knowledge are in great
demand in Fiji, but few people in this developing
country have access to these skills. Fiji is still struggling
to catch up with the technological age, and students
here are eager to learn skills that could help them
succeed in the future. Students teach Fijian youth
how to type and use common software, such as
Microsoft Word and Excel. We tutor those who are
unable to afford classes on their own or who do not
have access to computers. Students also introduce
the Fijian youth to the Internet, show them how to set
up an e-mail account, and better equip them with
the skills they need to enter the work force and
expand their career opportunities.
PLASTER, PAINT AND PENCILS
Develop relationships and share laughs
as you create art with young Fijians
8
Highlights
INSPIRE creativity and imagination in young minds.
ENRICH a school’s curriculum with art classes and
activities and exchange new ideas with local teachers.
PROVIDE materials, tools, and supplies for art
projects that local schools couldn’t otherwise afford.
HELP kids create their own masterpieces, which they
will take home to share with their mom and dad.
Details
Having limited resources means that most local
schools cannot provide art classes to their students.
The Plaster, Paint and Pencils program offers students
the chance to share their creative talents with eager
young apprentices. Students open the door to a
world of creativity and imagination for youngsters
who have few chances to express themselves
artistically. Armed with brushes, paint, drawing
pencils, and paper, each service team will create new
projects and lead art classes at local primary schools
and kindergartens. Classes full of wide-eyed and
excited children eagerly await, and our students
marvel as new ideas come to life and confidence
grows in the Fijian youth.
