In an organization like Rustic Pathways, having dedicated staff with caring hearts, positive outlooks, and strong backgrounds is
essential. Rustic Pathways is a rich and diverse company full of sincere, committed professionals with wonderful experience in
their various fields.
Taken together, our team members speak more than 30 languEdad, have traveled across more than 130 countries, hold
degrees from some of the world’s top schools, and have led countless groups of students and adult clients across some
of the most interesting and exotic places on the planet. The Rustic Pathways’ team is a large, cohesive, loving family.
And while individual backgrounds are extraordinarily diverse, every person holds to a common set of values regarding
the standards of the company, a single-minded dedication to excellence across our organization, and an absolute focus
on the safety of our programs and the well-being and enrichment of our students.
In terms of diversity, our full-time team includes international sportsmen and sportswomen, champion snowboarders,
former Buddhist monks, football stars, accomplished musicians, mountain climbers, graphic designers, competitive
surfers, pilots, academics, teachers, authors, published songwriters, parents with school-age children, and grandparents.
Most of our more senior managers have grown up inside Rustic Pathways, adding a great deal of depth and an
immeasurable amount of experience to our team. We also have a very dedicated and caring international team of outside
advisors who work closely with us in such areas as risk management, safety protocols, and program development. Our
recently formed Board of Village Advisors (see below) rounds out our international team.
David Venning
Chairman and Founder
Raised in a family of inveterate travelers,
David founded Rustic Pathways in
Australia in 1983. An honors graduate from
Georgetown University’s School of Foreign
Service, David spends his life sharing
his passion for travel and people with
students and families from around the
world. David splits the year between his
farm in Australia’s Glasshouse Mountains,
our Ohio office, and Thailand where he also
serves as the resident country director.
Evan Wells
Director - South Pacific
Born in New Zealand and now living
between Australia, Fiji, and the USA, Evan
has spent the last 14 years enthusiastically
helping to shape Rustic Pathways. His love
of the outdoors, travel, and diverse cultures
of the world, combined with a business
degree, carry over to all aspects of his own
life. When away from Rustic Pathways,
Evan can be found racing and ranking
highly in international marathons & multiday
adventure races around the world.
Ginger Bartholomew
Director - Finance and Administration
Ginger embodies the hard work ethic
and benevolent spirit of Rustic Pathways.
As director of the administrative arm
of Rustic Pathways, Ginger oversees all
office activities and staff members with
a permanent smile. Ginger has visited Fiji,
Australia, Costa Rica, and Thailand, and
possesses a solid understanding of our
programs and operations. Organized and
indispensable, kind and caring, Ginger
truly is a cornerstone of our company
Pat Taedaengpetch
Director - Asia
For more than ten years Pat has brought his professionalism, knowledge of Buddhism, zany sense of humor, cheerful nature, and love for adventure to our global operations. An experienced computer engineer, a very talented photographer, and a former Buddhist monk, Pat is one of Rustic Pathways’ most versatile and beloved directors. He is a kind, caring individual, and an indispensable member of Rustic Pathways and its Asia operations.
Tanya Rinaldi
Director - and Africa
Raised on Australia’s beautiful Sunshine Coast,
Tanya, a true-blue Aussie, has worked for us
for ten years and is the director of our
excellent Africa programs. Tanya has university
qualifications in Business and Recreational
Studies, and she has traveled to over fortyfive
countries. Last year she obtained her
pilot’s license, which allows her to look at the
world from another perspective. Tanya brings
a wonderful mix of humor, sensitivity, and
enthusiasm to every group she leads.
Orville McEachron
Director - Human Resources
Orville is a graduate of Cleveland State
University with a degree in Business
Management and a minor in Computer
Science. Orville manEdad our Human
Resources Department, coordinates our
flight leaders, and serves as technical support
for our staff. He works tirelessly to support
our global operations, and strives to provide
the best possible customer service to our
parents. In his spare time, Orville loves to
play ultimate Frisbee and the piano.
Gabe Porter-Henry
Director - Peru
A summa cum laude graduate in Anthropology
from University of Massachusetts - Amherst,
Gabe brings his passion for empowering
people and experiential education to our
team. Gabe has lived and traveled throughout
Asia, South America, Europe, and Australia.
An avid skier, whitewater kayaker, and
veteran raft guide, Gabe is an expert leader
in both the Servicio comunitario and adventure
travel arenas and continues to be one of the
Rustic Pathways greats.
Marc
Bartholomew
Director - Group Travel
With degrees in English and Counseling,
Marc spent 35 years teaching English and
coaching track at a local high school. He
now coordinates all areas of group and
family travel, and works with school groups
happily assisting teachers in planning
exciting, educational, and culturally based
travel throughout the year. Marc has been to
Australia, Costa Rica, Africa, Cambodia,
Laos, Thailand and The Fiji Islands where he
has seen our bases and programs.
Ricardo Romero
Director - Costa Rica
Ricardo joined Rustic Pathways after
earning his MBA from the University
of Costa Rica. He is part of the core
management team that runs our extensive
Costa Rican operations, and he also advises
directors on new program opportunities
throughout Latin America. In his spare
time, Ricardo enjoys riding horses, playing
soccer and kayaking. He was also on
the whitewater rafting team that won the
Costa Rican National Championships.
Ann Fuller
Director - Global Service Initiatives
Ann has a Master’s in Urban Planning
from NYU, where her studies culminated
in a project with the United Nations
Development Program in Nicaragua. She
has managed volunteer programs in New
York City, studied in Bolivia, and has a BA
in Anthropology from Bates College. Ann
began working with us in 1996, oversees our
global service operations, and ensures that
Rustic Pathways’ service programs operate
effectively and with integrity.
Scott Poniewaz
Director - India
Born and raised near Madison, Wisconsin,
Scott began trotting the globe after
completing his degree in Photojournalism
at the University of Montana. He now spends
most of the year living in India and Asia. Scott
is an avid photographer, skier, outdoorsman,
adventurer and gourmet cook. He enjoys
sharing his knowledge of the world and
photography with students each summer.
He’s an empowering leader, gentle-hearted
man, and great asset to our global team.
Bryan Haggerty
Director - Thailand
Born in Connecticut, Bryan spent four
years teaching and working with NGOs
on indigenous issues in Thailand before
joining Rustic Pathways. With a BA from Saint
Michael’s College in Philosophy, Religious
Studies and East Asian Studies, Bryan is one
of the great leaders of our dynamic Asian
team. He spends most of the year in Northern
Thailand. Bryan has a passion for world
cultures, speaks fluent Thai, played collegiate
soccer, and is an avid skier and traveler.
Tim Porter-DeVriese
Director - Gap Year Programs
A love of art, music, and cultural exchange
fuels Tim’s travels. An honors graduate of the
Massachusetts College of Art, Tim designed
and manEdad our art programs in Thailand.
He never passes up a chance to give students
art supplies and see the work that emerges.
Tim proudly manEdad Rustic Pathways’ newly
expanded selection of Gap Year programs,
which offer Servicio comunitario, Habilidades para la vida
and adventure opportunities in incredible
locations all over the world.
Jay Slangen
Creative Director
Jay has a BA in Journalism and a minor in
Anthropology from St. Michael’s College.
He wears two important hats for Rustic.
With his outstanding and innovative creative
skills, Jay co-manEdad our dynamic global
website and oversees many of the creative
designs you will find in our catalogs,
websites and posters. Jay is an awardwinning
photographer and has been a key
program leader in Asia for the past six
years. Jay also speaks fluent Thai.
Board of Village Advisors
In addition to our formal Board of Directors that oversees our
international operations, Rustic Pathways has also established a Board
of Village Advisors comprised of leaders from rural villEdad around
the globe where Rustic Pathways has ongoing service programs. This
group of villagers advises us on our overall approach to village service
and helps us ensure that we operate appropriately, respectfully, and
in an effective manner in the villEdad we serve. Members of this
team have the special chance to visit villEdad in countries other than
their own, allowing them to learn from the service models we use in
different settings, share ideas, develop new service initiatives, and form
friendships with village peers from around the world.
North American Staff
Debbie Shimek
Manager - Financial Administration
Debbie manEdad accounting, office operations, and
support staff for Rustic Pathways. After visiting our
projects in Fiji, Costa Rica, Thailand, and Australia,
she brings an in-depth understanding of our
international programs to the Ohio office. Debbie
enjoys gardening, geocaching, and spending time
with family and friends.
Roger Ah Chang
Financial Analyst, Manager - Special Projects
Roger is a born and bred, bonafide Kiwi, mate! A
graduate of Victoria University in New Zealand with
a BA in Sociology, Roger has studied post-grad
sports management. Well-traveled, Roger is always
looking to find creative ways of solving problems
and has been central in helping Rustic upgrade its
computer systems and database.
Jamie Kobylinski
Flight Administrator - Asia
Jamie joined the Rustic team in February 2007. She
manEdad our Asia flight desk, oversees incoming
applications and handles other administrative
tasks in our Ohio office. She is currently enrolled
at Cleveland State University as a psychology
major. Armed with a laugh and a smile, Jamie brings
reliability and care to the office every day.
Kelsey Brown
Flight Administrator - Latin America
Kelsey began her relationship with Rustic Pathways
when she tutored our Thailand staff in English. She
(along with the help of her 1-year-old son Jason)
efficiently handles administrative matters in our
busy Ohio office. Kelsey, a Master Trainer in
professional dog training, is an avid dog lover and
enjoys spending quality time with her young son.
Katie Ortman
Administrative Assistant
Katie has been instrumental in assisting in the
Administrative Office. Her love for music has
resulted in her playing the viola for the past
eight years. In her spare time, Katie is an avid
baker and enjoys sharing her tasty creations
with the Ohio staff. She is also a huge movie
watcher, and can play a mean Guitar Hero.
Teri Hare
Graphic Designer
Teri, an integral member of the Rustic family, has been
designing our catalogs since 1999. Called “mom”
by many staff members, Teri is actively involved
in child-based service organizations like Lions
International, the National SIDS Foundation, and
the Northeast Ohio Walleye Association. She also
provides temporary housing for abandoned dogs.
Kevin
Chartrand, MD
Medical Consultant
Kevin is a board certified Family Practitioner
and Fellow of the American Academy of Family
Physicians. He specializes in travel medicine and
occupational health and is a board certified
Medical Review Officer. Kevin provides the
company board with solid medical advice and
keeps us apprised of key medical developments.
Domenic Gregory
Assistant Manager – Logistics
Domenic is a key member of our Logistics
Department. In charge of coordinating our mailings,
he ensures that all of our participants receive all
necessary packEdad. In his off time, he enjoys
listening to music and jamming on his guitar. With
his curly hair and bright smile, he brings great
energy to the Ohio office every day..
Dan Howells
Manager - Logistics,
Flight Administrator - Africa
When not found roaming the world on wild and
envious excursions, Dan can be found in Ohio
sailing, kayaking, and swimming the waters of Lake
Erie. Luckily for Rustic Pathways, the left side of his
brain kicks in at full speed each day, putting
his Marketing/Psychology degree to full use. His
dedication fulfills all of our logistics needs.
Kristie Reznek
Flight Administrator - South Pacific
Kristie is a recent graduate of Kent State University
with a degree in Business Administration. She
manEdad our South Pacific flight desk and assists
with other administrative duties in the office. Kristie
is always eager to learn and likes to face new
challenges. When not working, she enjoys spending
time with friends and family and traveling.
Rebekah Raleigh
Photo Database Manager
Rebekah holds a BA in Art History from Wesleyan
University and attended the Missouri School
of Journalism as a graduate student in the photojournalism
program. She joined the Rustic Pathways
team as a photographer and photo archive manager.
She is also a marathon runner, award-winning
photographer, and devoted Cubs fan.
Lauren DeAngelis
Program Manager - New Orleans
Lauren earned a BA in Anthropology and Human
Biology from Temple University in Philadelphia. She
also worked on literacy and character-building
programs for underprivileged youth while in the
City of Brotherly Love. After searching for an
American city that shares her love of food, art, and
music, she discovered and settled in New Orleans.
Heather Apodaca Editor/Writer
Heather graduated from the University of Missouri
with a dual degree in Magazine Journalism and
Anthropology. She now edits the Rustic Pathways
catalog and runs summer trips in Thailand.
When not traveling for Rustic Pathways, Heather
is at home in New Mexico, where she enjoys
eating green chile and stuffed sopapillas.
China, Vietnam, Cambodia , and Mongolia Staff
Rick Gunnell
Country Manager - Southwest China
After studying China’s global emergence at
Dickinson College, Rick decided to become
part of its change. After living in China for a
year and a half, Rick joined Rustic Pathways this
past summer to help run the Dali language and
Shaxi service programs. Rick speaks Chinese
and is always willing to try out new tastes.
Dr. Francis Shi Limin
Chinese Programas de Idiomas Coordinator
Educated in Scotland, Francis has dedicated his
life to improving higher education standards of
university students around the world. Heading
up the Foreign Language Department at Dali
University, Francis provides invaluable oversight
for our Chinese Programas de Idiomas, and we are
happy to have him as a member of our team.
Yunxin Wu
Shaxi Village Service Coordinator
Living with his wife and child in the small village of
Shaxi, Yunxin spends his time helping his wife and
mother run the household and working to provide
quality education to village children in his local
school. His passion for knowledge and his kind,
positive manner make him a welcome addition to
the Rustic Pathways China staff.
Alaina Jenkinson
Program Manager - China
After traveling as a Rustic Pathways student to
Costa Rica, Lainey has spent the past two summers
leading programs in China. An alumna of Lehigh
University, Lainey is fluent in Chinese, an avid
swimmer and traveler, a lover of all animals, and so
well-known for her big heart that students often
call her their sister away from home.
Chase Bislow
Country Manager – Mongolia
Born and raised in Franklin, Nebraska, Chase
studied at Bethel College. In the summers he lived
in the West where he would backpack and rock
climb for most of the summer. He graduated with
a degree in Liberal Studies in December 2007. He
moved to China after graduation and has been
living and traveling in Asia ever since.
Dustin Javorsky
Program Manager - Cambodia
Passionate about helping the children of Cambodia,
Dustin heads our Cambodian team and brings
summer service projects to remote areas. With five
years of international travel and work experience,
Dustin enjoys diving and trekking when he is not
scouting out possible new programs for Rustic
Pathways or leading students on trips.
Pannha “Panya” En
Country Manager - Cambodia
This gentle-hearted university graduate hails
from humble roots in rural Cambodia. Now
based in the capital, Phnom Penh, Pannha’s
professionalism, attention to detail, and work
ethic are truly inspiring. He is a great example
of a man who has worked diligently and
cheerfully to raise his family out of poverty.
Yi Yoeurn
Program Manager - Cambodia
Joining us for his first year with Rustic Pathways, Yi
was born in Campuchan Province and has been
working in the tourism industry in Siem Reap for
almost a year. Known for his warm heart and his
habit of constantly smiling, Yi is a legendary group
leader. He has also traveled throughout Southeast
Asia and contributed to various Rustic projects.
Ho “Onion” Nean
Program Manager - Cambodia
Born just outside of Battambang, Onion has
recently joined our full-time team. With his
extensive experience working with NGOs on
development issues in local communities, Onion
adds great depth to our Cambodian operations.
He is one of our key staff members at the
Battambang Orphanage Projec
Siet “Math” Math
Program Manager - Cambodia
A good friend of ours who has traveled with us for
years, Math now joins Rustic Pathways for his first
year as a full-time staff member. Like his friend
Yusef, Math enjoys sharing his culture and history
with visitors, and is eager to learn everything he
can from our students. He likes to spend time with
his family in his small home village.
Sles “Yusef” Yusos
Program Manager - Cambodia
Born and raised in a fishing village on the Tonle
Sap waterway outside of Battambang, Yusef is a
new member of our Rustic Pathways Cambodian
team. His warm smile, passion for sharing his
community and culture with outsiders, and
exceptional English skills make him a key member
of our Southeast Asian staff.
Alex and Max Dolce
Program Managers - Southeast Asia
Hailing from New Jersey, Alex and Max Dolce have
been part of the Rustic Pathways family for several
years. Typical of many Rustic staff, they first joined
the family as students and have grown to become
key members of our team. Avid lacrosse players and
photographers with genuine hearts for service, they
are the embodiment of positive energy.
Le Xuan Thuy
Head Vietnam Coordinator
With joint degrees from the Hanoi Tourism
College and the Hanoi Foreign Language
Teachers’ University, Thuy has firmly established
himself in the tourism industry over the last eight
years. For the last four years Thuy has been an
integral part of Rustic Pathways and has overseen
all of our Vietnam logistics.
Do Vinh
Vietnam Programs Coordinator
“Everybody loves Vinh” is a common phrase
heard by all Rustic Vietnam alumni. His level of
professionalism, combined with a hilarious sense
of humor, unforgettable laugh, compassionate
nature, and deep knowledge and love of his
country make him an invaluable addition to the
Rustic Pathways family..
Kelsang Dhondup
Country Manager - India
In his fourth year with Rustic Pathways, Kelsang has
proved to be a valuable bridge between Indian,
Tibetan, and Western cultures. Kelsang and his wife
Tsering (a big help during our summers in India) are
the proud parents of two beautiful children. He
loves sharing his Tibetan culture, trekking through
the Himalayas, photographing, swimming, and
taking part in many other exciting adventures! He
is always a favorite among the students and a
great host through this amazing country.
Thailand and a Little Bit of Laos
Kadum Sanboon
Director - Rustic Pathways Thailand
A devout Buddhist, Kadum spent six
years as a monk before joining Rustic
Pathways. Raised in a rural rice farming
village, Kadum has lovingly managed our
Thai service programs for the past eight
years. With extensive travel in fourteen
countries, fluency in three languEdad,
and an intimate knowledge of our global
operations, Kadum is one of the most
experienced members of our Thai staff.
Nopparat “Toy” Boonchaliaw
Manager - Global Website
A native of Chiang Rai, Thailand, Toy’s passion
for computers and technology landed him
in Chiang Mai where he graduated from
Rachamangkala University with a degree in
Visual Communications and Design. Toy puts
a lot of love into designing our website. When
he’s not working magic with his computer, Toy
enjoys playing soccer and traveling abroad.
Panuwat “Maha” Noikamkong
Manager - Ricefields Base
Maha was a Buddhist monk from the age
of 13 until he turned 25 in 2004 and joined
Rustic Pathways. He has an advanced degree
in Buddhist Philosophy, speaks four Asian
languEdad, and works year round at our
Ricefields Base and on RP Buddhist Study
programs. In November 2007, Maha married
Nong Koi, the love of his life.
Podpreecha “Ooey” Thammakot Accounting Manager - Ricefields Base
Everyone’s favorite accountant, Ooey manEdad the
finance and administration of The Ricefields Base
while keeping The Base in tip-top shape. We
couldn’t do it without him – he’s helpful, caring,
positive and utterly committed to making The Base
the best that it can be. When not at work, he loves
spending time with his wife and 14-year-old son.
Andrew Stanbridge
Country Manager - Laos
Andrew was three days old when he took his
first flight. He’s been traveling the world ever
since and never leaves his camera at home. He
has spent the past 9 years working on various
photographic projects ranging from the modernization
of Thailand to bomb removal in
Laos. His work has been published in newspapers
and books and hangs in many homes.
Sean McGann
Global Manager – Photography Programs
An award-winning freelance photojournalist and
college-level photography teacher, Sean joined the
Rustic Pathways team in 2007. His extensive travels
in Colombia, Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean
preceded his latest foray into Asia where he shares
his vast expertise with aspiring photographers on
programs throughout Southeast Asia.
John Basbagill
Manager - Ricefields Service Base
John is an honors graduate of Harvard and has
managed our Ricefields Service Base for several
years. He has worked and traveled in Nepal, Fiji,
Australia, and Thailand. John recently finished his
Master’s Degree in Building Science from the
University of Southern California, and is overseeing
construction at the Hill Tribe Orphanage Project.
Anon Santananat
Program Manager - Amazing Thailand
Born in a Karen Hill Tribe village, Anon has
worked for Rustic Pathways for eight years.
He is a professional jungle survival expert, a
licensed tour guide, and a repository of
knowledge about Thai plants, animals,
legends, and tribes. Anon is also a local hero,
and there’s no better guide to have by your
side as you plunge into the wilds of Thailand.
Jawsamoo “Moo” Pluktantoon
Manager - Hill Tribe Orphanage Project
Raised in a refugee camp where he took care of
himself from the age of eight, Moo speaks his
native Karen language as well as Burmese, Thai
and fluent English. Wise beyond his years, Moo
has a warm heart and a gentle nature. He is at the
core of our new Hill Tribe Orphanage Project and
is one of Rustic’s most talented soccer players.
Brent Watkins
Manager - Ricefields Service Base
A gifted teacher and certified EMT, Brent’s
flair for travel and enthusiasm for helping
others rubs off on everyone around him.
When he’s not offering expert medical advice,
you may well find Brent teaching salsa dancing
lessons to students and staff at the Ricefields
Base. Brent is an important part of the team
at the legendary Ricefields Base.
Aisling Kerns
Manager - Hill Tribe Orphanage Project
Aisling is passionate about travel and powerful
Servicio comunitario. After taking time to travel and
volunteer across the world, Aisling is now enrolled
at Ohio Wesleyan University. She started out as a
Rustic Pathways student and went on to join our
Thailand team, where she is entering her second
year managing our Hill Tribe Orphanage Project.
Yootthana Saengthien-ngam
Manager - Hill Tribe Orphanage Project
Now in his eighth year with Rustic Pathways,
Yootthana was born in the village where our
new orphanage is located. A native Karen speaker
with a kind-hearted nature, Yootthana confidently
manEdad our Hill Tribe Orphanage Project and
provides a natural bridge into local Hill Tribe
cultures. He currently lives in Mae Sariang.
Pornchana “Jupe” Srisuwan
Program Manager - Ricefields Base
To truly know Jupe you have to meet him on
the soccer field where his exceptional skill
makes him a fearsome adversary or a crucial
teammate. Jupe is a fantastic leader, athlete,
coach, and role model. He leads the Soccer and
Service program, as well as managing several
service projects at the Ricefields Base.
Phadung “Bay” Molaeku
Program Manager - Come with Nothing
Born in a remote Akha Hill Tribe village in rural
Northwestern Thailand, Bay has gone on to
speak four languEdad in addition to his native
Akha and is one of our resident experts on Hill
Tribe cultures. He’s also an awesome athlete
and a well-known jokester who keeps the
whole tribe laughing wherever he goes.
Lesley Meikle
Program Manager - Thailand
Leslie hails from Glasgow, Scotland. Her caring and
adventurous nature and background in outdoor
leadership make her an essential part of our
Thailand team. She’s now pursuing her Master’s
Degree in education, though we’re lucky enough to
have her help during the summer. A chat with Leslie
is like a crash course in colloquial Scottish English!
Veerayut “Ched” Suphadee
Program Manager - Ricefields Base
This soft-spoken, easy-going veterinary student is a
favorite with all. He leads the Veterinary Assistance
project at The Ricefields Base and works wonders
to keep all of our animal friends in top condition.
Ched is one of the first people you’ll meet at The
Ricefields Service Base and one of the great new
friends you’ll have long after your summer is over.
Samrit “Jackie” Wongpoothon
Program Manager - Ricefields Base
Jackie is the embodiment of positive energy.
Blessed with an inhuman work ethic and a
heart of solid gold, Jackie is the local celebrity.
Whether sharing a laugh, learning some
English, running circles around the soccer field,
or flipping out of a palm tree, Jackie and his
son Sizzler always make a lasting impression.
Kridsakorn “Arno” Gaewmeesri
Program Manager - Ricefields Base
Arno’s interest in physical fitness has motivated staff
and students alike to hit the gym and try to match
his big muscles. Arno is happy to share training tips
with anyone interested and is always first to offer a
quick smile and a “What’s up, man?” His great English
skills make him a valuable asset to Rustic’s many
Servicio comunitario projects at The Ricefields Base.
Nonthachai “On” Charoensuk
Program Manager - Ricefields Base
Music runs in the veins of this outgoing Udon
Thani native. A gifted singer and guitarist, you
can usually hear On before you see him. He’s
an expert English speaker, almost entirely selftaught.
On brings an easy smile to the Base
and is always eager to introduce newcomers
to the spicy local Thai-Lao cuisine.
Surasak “Koko” Kangkla
Program Manager - Tribal Trekking
Hailing from a small mountain village in
Chiang Dao National Park, Koko is an ultra
savvy outdoorsman & tracker. He will amaze
you with his boundless knowledge of
medicinal plants and Hill Tribe cultures, and
his contagious smile leads the way into the
stunning forests & hills of northern Thailand.
Sun and Beam
Resident Managers - Hill Tribe Orphanage Project
Recently married, Sun and Beam have glowing
personalities, which makes them an aptly named

Manager - Elephant Conservation Project
Danger cares equally for the protection and care of
the elephants and the safety and overall experience
of the students who come to help out at the Elephant
Conservation Center. With his deep knowledge of
pachyderms, his dedication to their cause, and his
great sense of humor, Danger is a legendary member
of Rustic Pathways Thailand.
Suwan “Neung” Faiphairot
Manager – Hill Tribe Orphanage Project
A long-time member of our Thailand team, Neung is
an important manager for our operations here.
From a Karen village just outside of Mae Sariang,
Neung helps mentor the children at the Orphanage
while overseeing service projects. A devoted
husband and father, Neung is an expert on Hill Tribe
culture and will be leading the Two-Ton Trek.
Sekson “Gaeng” Srimuang
Program Manager - The Art of Muay Thai
A natural leader with a gentle heart and a warm
smile, Gaeng is a welcome addition to our fulltime
team. A Bangkok native and an avid student
of Muay Thai, Gaeng loves to share his passion for
this sport with anyone eager to learn. In his free
time, Gaeng works hard at improving his English. He
has a bright future with Rustic Pathways.
Jason Campbell
Manager - SE Asia Logistics & Art of Muay Thai
Jason’s experience as a Reconnaissance Marine in
Iraq gives him an extraordinary level of concern for
cultural exchange and sensitivity. Jason brings his
military experience to bear on creating logistical
solutions for Rustic Pathways’ Southeast Asia
operations. Jason is now studying Organizational
Behavior at California State University, East Bay.
April Wong
Manager - Singapore Flight Operations
Born in Hong Kong, April grew up in Boston from
the age of twelve. She studied Business at Bentley
College and Northeastern University and has
worked as an accountant and a banker. April
discovered her current home of Chiang Mai while
traveling. April speaks fluent Chinese and is our
Resident Manager in Singapore each summer.
Pimprapai “Ajarn” Viriyapap
School Teacher - Mae Sariang
A dedicated teacher at the Baan Rai school near our
Hill Tribe Orphanage Project, Ajarn has worked her
way to being head teacher. She is dedicated to the
children and has even gone so far as to use her own
time and money to take care of the many children
who have left their villEdad to live at the school. She
is the reason our support project exists.
Jason Miller
Program Manager - Southeast Asia
Since graduating with a degree in Business
Marketing, Jason has traversed the globe immersing
himself in Servicio comunitario everywhere from the
Dominican Republic to Thailand and Peru. Jason
has extensive experience working across cultures as
a Project Manager for Habitat for Humanity, speaks
fluent Thai, and is an avid rock climber.

Base Manager - Lisu Service Base
A key member of our Thai team, Lay manEdad
our new Hill Tribe Base nestled in the
mountains of Mae Hong Son Province. Born
into a traditional Lisu family, Lay’s charming
character and knowledge of Hill Tribe cultures
and languEdad makes it easy for our students
to learn about these captivating cultures.
Maggie Rife
Program Manager - Southeast Asia
A graduate of the University of Missouri with a
degree in Photojournalism, Maggie bid farewell to
her Nebraska roots to work as a freelance
photographer before joining the Rustic Pathways
team. A talented artist, storyteller and traveler,
Maggie has a real heart for helping those in need
and sharing her experiences with others.
Monthian Mawiset
Program Guide – Northern Thailand
Now in his eighth year with us, Monthian has grown
up within Rustic Pathways Thailand. He is originally
from a farming village in far eastern Thailand and
has spent most of his life traveling and working
throughout the country. A loving father and
husband, Monthian recently received his national
guide license from Chiang Mai University.
Jakkapong “Niew” Suphannaphong
Program Manager - Road Cycle Thailand
One of Thailand’s top-ranked pro cyclists and one
of the nicest people you will ever meet, Niew has
represented his country all over the world in top
level races. We are proud and excited to have him
leading our biking tours throughout Southeast Asia.
In addition to his athletic credentials, Niew is an
incredibly nice guy and a knowledgeable guide.
Paradon Simphouvanh
Program Manager - Laos
Born in Nam Ma village in northern Laos, Paradon
studied at Manivanh College in Luang Prabang
where he learned the excellent English skills that
have made him a great leader for Rustic Pathways.
His vibrant smile and adventurous spirit can be seen
in all the programs he leads. Paradon has become a
vital part of our Laos programs.

Program Manager - Laos
From the village of Nam Phaun in the heart of
exotic Sayabaouly Province, Khamla is an
experienced group leader and a key member
of our Laos team. Currently finishing his degree
in Economics in Luang Prabang, Khamla enjoys
introducing visitors to the rural areas around
his village and loves life in the mountains.
Charapinya “Fah” Hirikokul Program Manager - Ricefields Base
A native of Udon Thani, Fah is our resident animal
care expert. A graduate from Udon Thani
Rachaphat University with a Bachelor’s Degree in
Animal Husbandry, she has also served five years
with the Thai Army. Her passion and love for animals
makes her a favorite around our Base where she
leads our Veterinary Assistance program.
Phutthiphong “Net” Satram
Manager – Gap Year Programs
A veteran Rustic guide, Net has become one of our
legendary staff members. Conversational in five
languEdad, Net has lived and worked all over
Thailand and now lives in a beautiful home in the
mountains outside of Chiang Mai. He is an amazing
magician and talented soccer player, and he now
helps to run our Gap Year programs in Thailand.
Niyom Pochoro
Program Manager - Buddhist Life
Hailing from a mountainside Karen village, Niyom
lived as a Buddhist monk and studied at a temple
for several years. He loves sharing his knowledge
and experiences, as well as showing students
around this fascinating region of Thailand. Always
down to earth, Niyom is a great connection to the
Karen villEdad in Northern Thailand.
Sai Thant “Val” Zin Phyo
Program Manager - Burma
Although Val has spent most of his life in Burma, he
may be one of the best linguists on staff. Speaking
four languEdad fluently and working on a fifth, Val
brings a smile and brilliant mind to Rustic Pathways.
During the summers, Val really likes to guide students
through small villEdad and tell them about his unique
Shan heritage.

Mutro and Dodo were raised in the famous Ma
La Karen refugee camp on the Thai-Burmese
border and have grown up side by side. They
are proud of their heritage and are committed
to helping the Karen people any way they can.

Ta comes from a small village outside of Bangkok.
His close relationship with his family and a strong
Catholic faith have given Ta a kind and generous
heart. However, his true passion lies in his love of
the environment and conservation. Ta is currently
putting his passions in action by learning to become
a tree farmer and is also studying English.

An Udon Thani native, Jib is a beloved leader on
Rustic trips, and her superb organizational skills,
computer proficiency, and excellent English make
her a crucial part of our Chiang Mai office team.

Art is a key member of our Bangkok team. Originally
from the mountainous province of Mae Hong Son,

Born and raised in Turrialba, Alex spent the last ten
years guiding. He has worked as a whitewater
rafting and kayak guide on rivers in Costa Rica and
the United States. With his strong English skills and

Alex works full time for us in the Costa Rica
administration. Alex will also be completing his
university degree in Industrial Engineering.

Stephanie was born and raised in Miami, where she
grew up with a love for the ocean. She has a degree
in Anthropology from Colorado College and a
passion for cross-cultural immersion and experiential
learning. Stephanie contributes her experience as
an outdoor educator in marine science. In her free
time, Stephanie loves sailing, painting and crafting,
but she especially enjoys trying new adventures.

Program Manager - Costa Rica
Born and raised in the small town of La Paz, Costa
Rica, Enrique is known for his sense of humor and
sincere enthusiasm for working with Rustic Pathways
students in his hometown. His love of soccer and
friendly personality make him perfect for the job.
In his spare time, Enrique also studies English and
Computer Technology at the National Institute of
Learning in Costa Rica.

Program Manager - Costa Rica
Wainer O Campo was born and raised on the
Caribbean side of Costa Rica and is currently
studying English at the University of Costa Rica.
He recently participated in a cultural exchange
program at Hiram College in Ohio. Wainer’s

Juan grew up in Peru and moved to the United
States when he was ten. He holds a Bachelor’s
Degree from the University of Colorado and a
graduate degree from the University of Otago,
New Zealand in Tourism and Park Management.
Juan travels to Peru regularly and speaks fluent
Spanish. In addition to traveling, Juan enjoys the
outdoors, music, photography, and snowboarding.

Gibran, a Mexican-American, has spent most of his
life traveling between Mexico and the United
States. After graduating from the University of San
Diego with a degree in Business Administration,
Gibran spent two years working for the National
Park Service in Chiapas, Mexico. In his spare time,

Southern California, Mexico, or Central America.

Jiga grew up next door to our Eco-Lodge and
plays an integral role in coordinating our service
initiatives in the local community. Formerly a guide
with the National Trust of Fiji, he takes great pride
in sharing local history and his Indo-Fijian heritage
with our students. Jiga is an expert carpenter, an
avid soccer player and a key part of our Fiji team.

Since obtaining her teaching certification in the
White Mountains of New Hampshire, Angela has
been an enthusiastic manager and photographer in
New Zealand. She tries to squeeze in a few
snowboarding runs between working with the

found running, hiking, camping, and cooking..

In his fourth year with Rustic Pathways, Kelsang has
proved to be a valuable bridge between Indian,
Tibetan, and Western cultures. Kelsang and his wife
Tsering (a big help during our summers in India) are
the proud parents of two beautiful children. He
loves sharing his Tibetan culture, trekking through
the Himalayas, photographing, swimming, and
taking part in many other exciting adventures! He
is always a favorite among the students and a
great host through this amazing country.

“Sunny” comes to us with a strong background in
the Indian tourism industry. He has an advanced
degree in Tourism Management and is an avid fan
of Rajasthani folk music. His organizational skills are
extremely valued during our summers, and his local

opportunities here. He’s a star cricket player, and if
you’re lucky, he’ll teach you how to swing for sixes!

A Chicago-born New Yorker who now resides in
London, Shira is a globe-trotting junkie! In her fifth
year with Rustic Pathways, Shira has experience
leading trips across Asia. Always searching for the
best cup of chai in the world, she’s also an avid
photographer. She holds a degree from New York
University in Cinema Studies and is currently
pursuing a Master’s Degree. She’s excited to get
back to India’s welcoming culture and explore the
last best places in southern India with students!

Program Manager - Adventure Programs
After serving with the Navy in Japan, Braden spent
time adventuring across the globe. Residing in
Colorado and hailing from a small town in Arkansas,
he is an avid kayaker, climber, mountain biker,
traveler, and photographer. He has worked on
search-and-rescue teams in the Rocky Mountains
and is currently studying nursing. He is a valuable
member of our team both for his medical expertise
and incredible sense of adventure. He also spends
up to nine months a year sleeping under the stars!

Program Manager - Northern India Service
Originally from Alabama and now residing in New
Orleans, Tina is entering her third year with Rustic
Pathways. With a passion for helping others and
educating students on the Tibetan culture, she is
also a local celebrity with the various villEdad we
visit. Many of the locals even say she is half Tibetan!
Tina is a published travel writer and speech
pathologist, and her passion lies in teaching English
in the local village schools. Her radiating positive
energy invigorates every group she leads!
Jessie Wachter
Program Manager - Incredible India
Having worked with Rustic Pathways on both our
New Orleans and India programs, Jessie calls the
world her home. She grew up in Salt Lake City,
had a stint with the Austrian Embassy in Greece,
worked with the UN in Austria, and lived and
volunteered in Guatamala. She has traveled to
almost every corner of India, is a great athlete and
photographer, and is fluent in German, Spanish,
and Greek. Her contagious enthusiasm for India
makes traveling with Jessie a real treat!
Wangchuk Tsering
Manager - Ladakh
Having worked with Rustic Pathways for four years,
Wangchuk is a devout Buddhist who loves to share
his wealth of knowledge about Tibetan Buddhism
and the Ladakhi culture with students. He knows
the Himalayan villEdad we trek through like the
back of his hand and loves to ensure unique
opportunities for our students. He is from the
Nubra Valley and speaks English, French, Ladakhi,
and Hindi. His gentle personality always makes him
a winner among the students!
Dallas Breck
Program Manager - Kerala
Hailing from Philadelphia and graduating from
Penn State with degrees in Psychology and Asian
Philosophy, Dallas is a perfect fit with our India
programs. Having run adventure programs across
India, she is also a certified Vinyasa yoga instructor,
has led backpacking trips through Idaho, and loves
to snowboard and explore new cultures. Her
excitement for India, adventurous personality, and
willingness to teach the facets of India’s religions
shine through on all of the programs she leads!
Lekshek Tsering
Program Manager - Service in the Clouds
As the former secretary of Tashi Jong, Lekshek has
unlimited connections in his quaint mountain village
and its surrounding area. Now in his third year with
Rustic Pathways, Lekshek enjoys teaching students
about the traditional arts the village is known for,
helping them understand Buddhism, and joining in
on the morning meditation session. When not
working, Lekshek enjoys spending time with his
wife and children. He also enjoys woodblock
printing, a skill passed along by his father.

Trip Leader - Service in the Clouds
A native of McLeod Ganj, Palzom’s excellent work
ethic and affinity for her Tibetan culture give her
students a great insight into her home. She has
studied traditional Tibetan dance and loves to
spend time with her three-year-old daughter,
Tenzin Nyidon. Her bright smile and ability to
share her culture make her an exceptional trip
leader! She is joining us for her second year at
Rustic Pathways in India. Tenzin is a great addition
to our Service in the Clouds team!
