Shaxi Village Project

Shaxi A Window to the Past
Located far off the tourist track in rural Yunnan Province, Shaxi is a place like no other. The people here are ethnic Bai and have lived in the region for more than 1,000 years. They have a bond with their land and environment that makes for a pleasant and simple life. Your home in Shaxi will be a renovated monastery that has been a vital part of the community for more than 200 years. We are honored to be welcomed into this sacred place and invite you to join us in this peaceful valley.

Mr. Wu Your Bridge into the Culture
In order to help a community, you must first understand it. Mr. Wu has lived here for over 30 years and has become a leader in the community. He will be your bridge into Shaxi and will help you understand life in the community and the challenges the village faces.

For more than a decade, Mr. Wu taught English at the local primary school, where he noticed that few students graduated and even fewer went on to study at a university. Most stayed to work in the fields or traveled to the big cities where they found menial jobs. He has a dream for a better future in the Shaxi Valley and hopes to inspire students to stay in school, study hard, and attend a university.

We are proud to help Mr. Wu achieve this goal. Together we have planned meaningful service projects that positively impact the village. The first project is at the primary school. You will help make general repairs to the classrooms – a bright environment fosters a bright mind – and help build athletic facilities. Our hope is that new facilities and cleaner, brighter spaces will motivate kids to spend more time at school, where teachers, coaches, and students like you can show them a future broader than life in the fields. Your service echoes Rustic Pathways’ long-term commitment to the people of Shaxi Valley.

Working the Land and Sharing Your Heart
Most mornings you will rise early and work alongside the villagers as they tend to their fields. You may plant and water crops, pick fruit and wheat for senior citizens, or even steer donkeys (that thankfully lighten the load) down the cobbled streets and out to the fields.

After the morning service session, you will return to the monastery for a shower and lunch and then start on the
afternoon projects. You may join Mr. Wu on a short hike up the lush hills surrounding the valley to offer food, materials and goodwill to the Yi people, another of the many ethnic groups that populate Yunnan Province. You will also help out at the local school. You will soon learn that many hands make for lighter work, and you will witness a way of life that will leave you a more informed and compassionate global citizen.

Yunnan Culture at its Best
When you aren’t working on service, Mr. Wu, his family, and the local villagers will introduce you to Chinese and Bai culture. You will learn basic calligraphy, help cook classic Chinese food, play mahjong, and even have the chance to pick up a little Mandarin. You will also have plenty of time to play with the kids or hike to the nearby Shi Bao Shan Temple, which is renowned throughout the region for its beauty.

To cap off the experience, your group will host a farewell banquet and performance for the village elders at the monastery. Your memories of your time in Shaxi will stay with you for a lifetime. This program connects perfectly with our Dali Language and Panda Conservation programs.

This program easily connects with all of our other Asian programs.
