Shangri-La Culture and Service
Day 1 – Tuesday
Location: San Francisco
After meeting and greeting your flight leader and the other China-bound students, we’re off to Hong Kong! This is an easy, non-stop ride across the Pacific – and most students find that after dinner and a movie, they’re able to manage dozing off to sleep for a while. So sit back, have a chat with your new friends, and enjoy the flight!
Day 2 – Wednesday
This day is ‘lost’ as you cross the International Date Line. But don’t worry– you’ll get it back when returning home!
Day 3 – Thursday
Location: Hong Kong, Kunming, Shangri-la
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport, where you will have time for a long awaited stretch. You will have a few hours in the airport before connecting onwards to Shangri-La via Kunming. The Shangri-La airport is just a few minutes from our guesthouse, and your first introduction to Tibetan culture – Yak steaks!
Day 4 – Friday
After a late wakeup call we will spend the morning getting comfortable in Shangri-la as you receive an introduction to Tibetan heritage and culture. Learn about the significance of prayer wheels or Thangka Paintings and try some delicious Tibetan Square noodles. In the afternoon we will head out into mountains outside of town to check out the Baishui (“White Water”) Plateaus – one of the most stunning natural wonders of this region. This is a great opportunity to get some beautiful pictures amongst the soaring peaks of Yunnan and adjust to the crisp mountain air. It is very important to use this day to adjust the high altitude (almost 10,000 feet) and fight off the jet lag, so we will be sure to take it slow.
Day 5 – Saturday
In the morning we will walk through the old town to a local artisan co-operative to learn a bit about traditional Tibetan handicrafts and attend a specially arranged class with traditional Tibetan craftsmen to help us make some of our own. You may not be an expert by the end of this morning seminar, but you will have a special souvenir you made yourself to take home!
After lunch we will regroup and head out of the old town to learn a bit about our first service project at the Dixi Charity School. After touring our base for the next two days, we will sit down to learn a bit about the project, their goals going forward, and obstacles they have encountered in the past. After a synopsis of the project we will be working on, we will enjoy a dinner with the students – expect a lot of giggling! – and some time for games before bed. Don’t stay up too late though, morning comes early out in the mountains!
Days 6 and 7
After waking up at the Dixi Charity School, we will begin our first full day of service. Projects may include building a staircase, improving waste removal systems or assisting the teachers in the classroom with Basic English. Be prepared to commit a full day to work at the school. Enjoy lunch with the students and don’t be afraid to help them out with some of their lessons. Most of the students at the Dixi school board at the school so you will have plenty of time to play games and hang out with them before bed. At the Dixi School we will be living in dorms on the campus just like the students, so getting to know the community here will come naturally.
Day 8 Tuesday
After teary goodbyes and many hugs, we will make our way back to Shangri-la Old Town. Make sure you bring your bathing suite for a quick swim below a beautiful waterfall on the way! We will take this afternoon to rest up and settle in to our guesthouse in the Old Town. After unpacking and grabbing some lunch we will head out of town to visit an all-natural hot spring (a rare occurrence in China). Spend the afternoon soaking in the natural mineral water, enjoying the stunning Himalayan Vistas and reflecting on the project you have just completed.
Day 9-11
Today we will get back into our service routine with another early morning! From the Old Town, each day we will commute to the ETTI offices where we will get instructions on the days projects. ETTI’s students are mostly ages 16-22 and seeking professional training as a means to find opportunities as an entrepreneur or in the hospitality industry. We will commit four days to this project, and could be involved in a variety of different initiatives during that time so be prepared to be flexible and work hard! Each evening we will head back to the Shangri-la old town where we will enjoy traditional meals and Tibetan dancing and singing in the town square.
Day 12 – Saturday
After a morning of service and goodbyes at the Eastern Tibet Training Institute, we will head out to a night of luxury, rest, and beautiful plains scenery on the lovely Napa Lake. Only twenty minutes outside of Shangri-la Old Town, this is the perfect place to reward yourself after a long week of service. Spend the afternoon in the upstairs guest lounge that looks out over Napa Lake while relaxing and playing cards, or take an optional kayak out around the lake for the afternoon before a big barbecue dinner! Just remember to get to bed early and rest up for our big day of hiking tomorrow.
Day 13- Sunday
Today marks the last leg of our adventure. After a big breakfast, we will meet up with our guides and team of horses who will come along to help lighten the load and head into the backcountry. Make sure you take only what you need; our horses have to carry everything that comes on the trip! Today we will hike about two hours in the morning before stopping for lunch, and finishing with a couple hours in the afternoon.
Day 14 – Monday
Today we are officially in the backcountry! You will wake up on this morning deep in the Himalayan foothills. With no visible signs of the city we have left behind, we will gather for a quick breakfast while our tents are packed up, and get ready for another full day. Our first stretch today will take us to a large alpine lake – A sacred site in Tibetan tradition – where our guides will help us understand the importance of sights like this while we enjoy a quiet lunch and get our camp setup. From the shores of the lake, we will leave the horses behind and head out for an afternoon excursion going up to a surrounding peak.
Day 15 – Tuesday
Today will likely be our hardest day, as we pack up our camp early and head for a high pass by late morning. From here we will have stunning views of the landscapes around us and appreciate distance we have travelled. This day will have our most dramatic views, with stunning rock cliffs rising out of fields full of wild alpine flowers, cloud beds in the valleys below us, and the glaciated peaks of the Tibetan Himalayas poking up into the crystal blue skies. After taking our fill of pictures, we will begin the descent, once again camping beside an alpine lake.
Day 16 – Wednesday
Today we will have a gentle hike back down to the shores of Napa Lake before unpacking, saying goodbye to our leaders and loyal horses, and heading back to modern accommodations in the old town for a pre-dinner shower, some last minute souvenir shopping and a farewell feast.
Day 17 – Thursday
Location: Shangri-la, Kunming, Hong Kong and San Francisco
Waking up early on this final day, you will pack your things, eat your final momo (Tibetan dumplings), and head out for the airport. You will have an early flight to Kunming with your program leaders before saying your final goodbyes as you take off for your next adventure.
*A note about service locations on this program: We have identified many service project locations in the Shangri-la county that are very much in need of the energy of Rustic Pathways Students. The two organizations detailed above, Dixi Charity School and the Eastern Tibetan Training Institute, are very excited for you to come and work with them this summer! However, actual projects and individual project length may vary based on the needs of these communities closer to the program start.
An Important Note about Schedule Changes:
Rustic Pathways reserves the right to change, alter, or amend the daily itinerary for this trip at any time. Changes can be made for various reasons including changes in flight or program schedules, changes in the schedules of various external tours incorporated in our trips, the addition of new activities into a trip, or the substitution of an old activity for a new activity. The itinerary shown here provides a good outline of the anticipated daily schedule for this program. As with any travel program, some changes may occur
