Floating Village Service

Cambodia’s Capital
Welcome to Phnom Penh, the political and cultural capital of Cambodia! You’ll begin your trip exploring the remnants of Cambodia’s turbulent past with a trip to the S-21 Genocide Museum and the infamous Killing Fields. This interactive morning will introduce you to the country’s complex history and give you a solid cultural and historical base before you journey deep into the countryside. Lighten things up in the afternoon with a trip to the eclectic Russian Market, where you’ll find traditional wood carvings, modern Cambodian artwork, and hand-woven silks to bring home for your friends and family.

Cruise up the Tonle Sap
From Phnom Penh, you’ll board a boat for a cruise up the Tonle Sap Waterway. Snap photos in the early morning light as the boat weaves between nets cast by local fishermen. The village of Srey Prey will be your first stop and will offer a once-in-alifetime chance to sample life in a remote Cambodian Muslim village. Slow down and take in the local culture in one of the most welcoming places in the region. Children make the best tour guides here, and you’ll spend the morning exploring the village’s secret corners and drinking fresh coconut juice with your newfound friends. In the evening, you’ll work with local students on English writing and conversation skills. Crowing roosters and the bustle of the village will likely wake you up
early the next morning, and you’ll join in a football game or play with kids along the riverfront one last time before heading off to your next exciting destination.

The Riverside Town of Battambang
Catch a glimpse of the new merging with the old in Cambodia’s second-largest town, Battambang. Oxcarts still rumble down the main streets, local women sell traditional ceramics in the market, and Buddhist monks walk quietly down the riverfront path in this slowly developing city. Your community service work here will center around an orphanage recently adopted by Rustic Pathways. You’ll brighten the days of the broad-smiling but impoverished children by playing games and tutoring English. Then cruise upriver with local fishermen to teach English to eager middle school children in a riverside village.

Floating Villages
Leaving Battambang, you will climb aboard a wooden boat and wind your way through the narrow rivers and canals that lead to Tonle Sap Lake. Float past houseboats full of friendly Cambodians and make stops at several floating villages, where you will distribute care packs to kids and meet local families. Hundreds of smiling children will welcome you all along your journey, and you’ll be surprised at how much a simple smile or photography session is appreciated by these curious kids who live so far from the modern world.

Angkor Wat
Dock your boat in Siem Reap, home of Angkor Wat and some of the world’s most exotic temples, and take in the kingdom’s ancient splendor. Witness a breathtaking sunrise at the ancient temples and marvel at the intricate carvings in the stone fortresses. You will also visit Angkor Thom, Bayon, and Ta Prohm (also known as the Tomb Raider temple).
Cap off your trip with a traditional Cambodian feast of exotic local fare before you say goodbye to this beautiful country and the many new friends you have met here.
