Ramp Up Your Spanish is an excellent one-week introduction to Spanish and a great refresher course for students traveling on other Rustic Pathways programs. The healthy balance of daily Spanish classes, real life conversations, and exciting cross-cultural adventures is the perfect combination of learning and fun.
Meet Your Costa Rican Family
The school is set on a panoramic hillside where the bucolic environment and beautiful vistas provide the perfect setting for integration into traditional Tico culture and lifestyle. During your stay, you’ll live with a hand-picked Costa Rican host family with whom you’ll share meals and quality time. This carefully organized and supervised arrangement gives you a personal and welcoming perspective on Costa Rican family life, and enhances both your Spanish classes and the cultural aspects of your trip.
School House Rock
During orientation, you’ll complete an oral and written evaluation that will be used to place you in a small group of three to five fellow students who have similar Spanish skills. Classes are held at a highly respected language school, and you’ll be taught by certified Costa Rican teachers who are trained to teach Spanish to foreign visitors. The program includes four hours of formal classes each weekday and focuses heavily on Spanish conversational skills. In addition to formal classes, you’ll enjoy cooking classes, dancing lessons, visits to local fruit and vegetable markets, interaction with locals, and participation in other unique cultural activities.
In and Around Turrialba
When not in the classroom or spending time with your homestay family, you will go on exciting excursions in the area. These unique outings will include an educational tour of an organic farm, a visit to the most important archaeological dig in Costa Rica, and a hands-on trip to El Serpentarium where you will learn about Costa Rican snakes. You may also have the opportunity to learn the art of growing and roasting coffee, watch a movie in Spanish at a local theater, play soccer with neighborhood kids, and hike and swim at the Aquiares waterfall.
A New Set of Skills
The quickest way to learn Spanish is to surround yourself with encouraging native speakers. At the conclusion of this program, you’ll receive a Spanish diploma that details your hours of study, the topics you covered, and other achievements. Now it’s time to continue on to another Rustic Pathways adventure in Costa Rica and put your improved Spanish skills to use. We suggest the Volcano and Rainforest Service Base, the Maleku Service Immersion Program, Soccer & Service La Paz, or the Caño Negro Service Project.

*** SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING GROUP SIZE: Our maximum capacity for this program is 30 students (this number includes Immersion, Ramp, and Intensive students). During the peak summer weeks, we will divide the group in two, and have half of the students do morning classes and afternoon activities, while the other half will do morning activities and afternoon classes. Dividing the group in no way takes away from the students’ experience, it enables us to give students more individual attention in smaller groups.***
*** SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES: This is a sample itinerary and is not set in stone. Not all weeks of this program are exactly the same and we allow our guides to use their discretion when choosing activities for each group. Some factors our guides use when choosing afternoon and all-day long activities for the group are weather, particular group interests, local special events, holidays, and more. Students spending the full two weeks on the Immersion or Intensive programs will have the opportunity to participate in most, but not all, of the activities offered.***
