"It was educational because of the opportunities provided to live with and interact with such a diverse culture. Understanding lifestyles other than the 'American Way' was beneficial to her growth and development.

Go Way Off the Beaten Path
Step into a world unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Trek deep into the ancient Lanna Kingdom, a realm seen by few tourists. Hike along footpaths to villages unreachable by car, and discover secluded waterfalls and rugged vistas overlooking misty mountaintops. We’ll hike, bike, raft, and kayak our way through the most breathtaking and challenging terrain that Thailand has to offer. You’ll get a chance to hear at least six different languages along the way as we stay with our friends in several vibrant Hill Tribe villages.

The People You Pass Along the Way Northern Thailand is a place of rich and diverse cultures. For centuries, Chinese traders journeyed across this rugged land en-route to the ports of the Indian Ocean. Along the forested highland fringes of Laos, China, Burma, and Thailand lie a variety of colorful and unique Hill Tribe minorities including the Karen, Akha, Hmong, Lisu, Lahu, Mien, and Shan people. Rustic Pathways is proud to employ Hill Tribe people with few opportunities for outside employment, and our connections in these remote areas run deep. Join our expert local guides who will lead you as you hop from tribe to tribe, hear fascinating stories about growing up in the mountains here, and immerse yourself these intriguing cultures.

Natural Splendor and Hidden Wonders
A quick flight from Bangkok gets us to Chiang Mai, the bustling capital of Thailand’s magical north and gateway to the jungles and mountains that we’ll call home for the next two weeks. Grab your pack, lace up your trail shoes, and hit the path! Travel by foot, mountain bike, and raft over mountaintops, through rivers and streams, and into caves using every means possible to get to our more remote destinations. We’ll even get a lift from Thailand’s most revered animal; the Asian elephant! A ride atop one of these massive yet gentle animals is an unforgettable experience. Later we’ll throw on helmets and life vests and prepare for a two-day rafting trip on one of Thailand’s most exhilarating rivers. Keep an eye out for monkeys and listen for gibbon calls as we wind our way downstream. It’s a spectacular ride punctuated by exciting rapids and an overnight at a campsite in the jungle. We’ll even do some spelunking in beautiful and mysterious limestone caverns.

The Service – Making Connections
Along your journey you will meet with genuine healers and Shamans, learn traditional jungle cooking, and maybe even try your hand at riding a water buffalo. Students will visit remote schools teeming with smiling children and give English lessons, help villagers working in their fields, or help clean up the village and set a good example for the youngsters who will join in and help you work. What sets this program apart from other trekking experiences is the chance to work side-by-side with the villagers and share some positive energy instead of just being a passer-by. You’ll be amazed at how rewarding the service is, and how you’ll feel much less like a tourist and much more connected to the local communities. This program is a great balance between adventure touring and getting involved in villages whenever possible to make a difference. Students will be rewarded up to eighteen hours of community service for complete participation in the service projects.

The Backcountry Cultural Experience
Tribal Trekking & Service is the perfect adventure trip for outdoor enthusiasts seeking to fuse adventure with unique cultural experiences and engaging service. Participants don’t need extensive trekking experience, but should be in good physical shape and comfortable with rustic style accommodations and cuisine. Join us and discover the secrets hidden within the forests and hills of Thailand! Questions? tim@rusticpathways.com.
