    TOURING + ADVENTURE

Come experience the breathtaking scenery, unique culture and amazing wildlife while helping in a number of rewarding community service projects on this magnificent continent.
Rustic Pathways is excited to offer this new and unique Culture In The Crater program that will provide an unforgettable experience for your 2008 summer.  Join us as we search for the Big Five game animals and participate in meaningful community and environmental service projects in one of Tanzania’s most famous conservation areas, Ngorongoro Crater.  Experience the rich cultures of one of Africa’s most colorful tribes, who have actively resisted change, and still follow the same lifestyle that they have for centuries, the Maasai.

The Roar Of The Wild
Wildlife gaze via safari vehicle and by foot on the plains of Tanzania’s most famous national parks, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara.  The best way to explore the Crater Highlands is on foot, so you will enjoy a full day nature walk rarely experienced by visitors to this region. You will also set out on a 2-day wildlife spotting frenzy aboard our private safari vehicles which are guided by local rangers. This is an incredible opportunity to get up close and personal with Africa’s native wildlife, and discover the true beauty of nature in this magnificent country.

Community And Environmental Service
Participate in a variety of projects benefiting the community and environment, while receive in-depth exposure to the Maasai culture and way of life. We work closely with village leaders and elders  designing worthwhile,  relevant projects, that share the goal of improving basic living conditions and learning environments.  The projects will range from refurbishing local school facilities, revitalizing the underprivileged areas of local Massai communities, painting, landscaping, tutoring to water purification within the village.  This is a hands-on service project where your efforts are rewarded with the knowledge that you have helped a community in need. When not engaged in service work, you will have the opportunity to learn unique customs, traditions, and some basic Swahili language.

Experience Life In And Out Of The Crater
Tanzania has more land devoted to national parks and game reserves than any other wildlife destination in the world.  Ngorongoro Crater, often called ‘Africa’s Eden’.  Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino returns to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass in the morning mist. Just outside the crater’s ridge, tall Masaai herd their cattle and goats through the green pastures of the highland slopes, living alongside the wildlife as they have for centuries. The Masaai are perhaps the most well known of Tanzania’s tribes and inhabit the northern regions of the country. Students will be based at our unique camp style accommodation just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Create An Unforgettable Summer
Culture In The Crater has been designed for the person who wants to experience some of Africa’s most fascinating wildlife and rich culture while participating in worthwhile community and environmental service projects, so if that’s you then join our Culture In The Crater program.  Community service students earn a certificate of participation for this project with up to 70 community service hours. This trip can also be taken as an add-on after any one of our other amazing African programs. If you would like to inquire about our Culture In The Crater program please email Tanya Rinaldi at tanya@rusticpathways.com.
